I met April from Project Runway!!!!!

I had the most surreal experience yesterday. I was running into my local Jo-Ann's today to pick up a few patterns and notions on sale. Before I grabbed those items I had to run to my favorite section of the store----the knits. I looked through them and didn't find anything I liked or didn't already have so I left. As I was leaving I turned around and I glimpsed a familiar face. Upon further inspection I realized it was April from this season's Project Runway. I knew she was from Savannah, but I never thought I'd ever run into her. I have old college classmates that live in Savannah that I've never even run into. But then maybe I'm a Project-Runway-contestant-from-my-city-magnet, especially since I ran into Mitchell Hall  from Season 6 on River Street (our downtown area) about 2 years ago.

Well I need to finish my story..... as soon as I recognized it was April I slowly and discreetly moseyed my way over to her and called her name sorta low so I wouldn't alert the whole store to her presence. She turned around and smiled. I then became a babbling fool--telling her I was just watching her on TV the night before and how much I admire her work. I even asked for a hug and she sweetly obliged (hugging is a southern thing). I then walked off because I didn't want to be a nuisance. As soon as I walked off it hit me that I could have taken a picture with her. How could I forget such a thing? I mean I could tell everyone I met her but that wouldn't quite as convincing.

So as soon as I worked up the nerves to go and ask for a picture with her  she started a conversation with a friend. So I waited, and waited, and waited until she was finished and humbly approached her for a picture. I explained I had a blog and would love to have a picture to post. She graciously took one with me (her friend volunteered to take the pic) and I was ecstatic. Her friend mentioned that April was starting her own line. I'm pretty proud that someone so young worked hard and had such an opportunity as appearing on Project Runway. Now she's starting her own line and who knows where she'll go from there. You know, this could be anyone of use one day (with or without the Project Runway Gig) but my point is sometimes you never know where you'll end up. You know the old saying.....Success always comes when PREPARATION  meets OPPORTUNITY!  If we develop our skills and work hard you never know what opportunities will open up to you. I'm feeling pretty inspired......it's time to go sew:) Happy sewing to you all:)

  1. How exciting! It must have been so nice to meet someone we've watched on television for so many weeks. I would have been quizzing her about the show, and the outcome.

  3. That is so neat. And you are so right that if we work on our skills, opportunity may come when we least expect it. I have a friend who was consistently working on her art day by day. She submitted a few pieces to a major art magazine, Down the road they asked her if she would like to submit pieces on a regular basis, to be an artist in residence and to be published in their magazine, then later they asked her to write an article. Well, a woman who works for a major publishing company was on her lunch break from work and went to Barnes & Noble and was flipping through the magazine and read my friend's article and saw the photos of her artwork and contacted her to see if she would like to write a book. She did, and it has sold very well. I have been leading a group of over 100 women through the projects in her book on my art blog. The book is The Artistic Mother. She shows moms how they can fit their art (or sewing in our case) into their daily lives, a little each day, without neglecting their families. I am so blessed to know her. She is a living example. Her blog is The Artistic Life, www.shonastudio.blogspot.com

  5. Victoria, that is such a sweet story and it says a lot about you. You were so polite to wait until she had finished her conversation. I am really enjoying your blog and your attitude towards creativity, dedication, humility and how you express your talents.

  6. Meeting people we see on TV is surreal for some reason :) but it was really very nice of her to be so kind and take time to talk to you and have a picture taken.

  7. What a great experience! I LOVE Project Runway because it showcases so much talent. It is an honor to see young and old on Project Runway, and I'm glad to know April is starting her own line.

BTW, doesn't she always style her hair in a top knot? I'm sure that made it easier to recognize her as well.

  9. Trudy---Great Story! Now that's inspiring:)

SLSEP---I didn't even think to ask her that. I wouldn't have the courage to put her on the spot like that.

A Little Sewing on the Side---You are too kind:) I equally enjoy your blog as well.

Vanessa---you're right--on the show I think she changed it once.

Sheila--- that's right you did meet her. These meetings make for memorable experiences:)

  10. Thanks for sharing~ that is truly an awesome experience to meet a TV celeb. However, what I really want to say is, I here that saying all the time..."Success always comes when PREPARATION meets OPPORTUNITY!", but for some reason it just hit me like a ton of bricks. I'm about to be BUSY, lol!! So, THNX for the reminder. :)
@ Trudy~ that is a very inspiring story, thanks for sharing!!

  16. What a neat experience. She is one of the contestants from this season I would like to meet. Did she actually buy something in Jo-Ann's? I too wondered about asking her if she had won. I think contestants are sworn to secrecy under horrible penalties if they give it away before the final show airs.

  17. Wow..this is great! I've been watching this seasons PR and I love April's designs. Starting her own line...what an opportunity PR was for her and it just goes to show anything can happen if you are positive and believe in yourself.
