Kwik Sew 3504--- Men's "Star Trek Costume Pants Replication Done!!!

You might recall this POST where I mentioned how I finished up a pair of pants for a male client/friend to where to Dragon con later this month. The pants are a replication of those worn by Kirk/Spock in the latest Star Trek movie. So here's my wonderful friend/client John modeling his new pants. He looks great and the fit is spot on. Not too worry I'll get a full pic of the pants again when he has his full costume on. I have to admit that I LOVED this pants pattern. I will definitely use it to make pants for my Hubby in the future. It is WELL drafted. I had to only make minor adjustments for John. I did a muslin of course to test and tweak the fit. Then I found the most perfect stretch dark gray denim to make them in. I think they were 9oz and sorry I forgot the stretch percentage. They were just the right weight for pants. I purchased it from Fabric.com.  Here's a few pics before I give construction details.

(These are the pattern pieces used to create the knee panel. I did lots of pintucks in the first piece and then connected to all the rest in that order. I was most nervous about this part of the pants but it ended up being pretty easy to draft and construct)

(Remember these were the pants I set out to create. It's not an exact replication but close. I think I did a good job!)

These were my first pair of real men's pants. I mean I've made boxer and sleep pants but this right here was the real deal! I LEARNED a TON from this experience. These pants weren't 100% perfect but they came out extremely well.

 I have to admit as far as construction goes I nixed the directions for the pattern and completely followed what I learned from taking Gentleman Jim's Tailored Pants Construction Workshop!!! You have to take one of his workshops it will change your life and your sewing!!! As you know he's my favorite tailor and mentor and a teacher to many!!! Most of what I did can be seen on his Tailored Pants DVD which he sells on his site HERE (look on left hand side). I'll share just a few details:
- I inserted the zipper per his instructions
-I actually ditched the pockets and re-drafted them to look like the costume pants.
-I drafted my own waistband (2 piece waistband with seam at center back) and used 1 1/4 ban-roll to give the waistband stability.
The back of the pants have functional double welt pockets or what is termed as "besom pockets" in the tailoring world.

So I LOVE these pants and so does John! I love the idea of making men's pants and plan to make more in the future! Ok enough about that. I'm pretty excited, next week I'll be taking Gentleman Jim's Coat workshop. I'm planning to make Winter coats for the whole family!!!! I ran across this Armani Prive' 2013 collection on Style.com and I think I drooled through the entire slideshow. And no wonder with looks as stunning as these! Sewing Jots and Tittles 7.20.14

I made another peplum top. It's turning into a sickness quickly. I can't help it I LOVE these things!!!

 I met the lovely Tracey when we both attended Mr. Jim's Pants Fitting and Construction Class. She may look familiar to many of you because she's been on other folks blogs. She's such a sweetheart!!!!

 I met a fellow local designer. Her design line is called Jaseeo! She's quite the talent!

 Was looking at old Project Runway episodes. Here's one of those memorable moments from season 2 when Zulema and Kara had a group challenge.  You know that famous insensitive line Zulema said to a distressed Kara---"If you're gonna cry, cut". So basically don't stop working because you're stressed. Strangely I always recall that line when I'm stressing over my own sewing. It's usually just the kick in butt I need. LOL!

 I just finished this jumper (doing my happy dance) and it turned out really cute. Will post soon. I'll have to make another one!!!

Non-Sewing

 Someone FINALLY loss that tooth! Geesh, thought we were going to have to call in a wrecking crew! LOL! It took forever. Luckily it just popped out while she was eating a sandwich one day! LOL!

 My Hubby's at it again. He and the rest of our church's drama department just wrapped up the production "My Wonderful Coma" where he played the part Wallace. They did a wonderful job!!!

Talking about major nostalgia! I LOVED these markers growing up. Looks like they're making a comeback. This commercial is pretty hilarious.

 I love to get notes on my computer from my little darling. I consider this my new screensaver LOL

I've never seen this man more SEXIER then when he's holding a cleaning appliance! LOL! A man helping out around the house is just plain sexy. I know you agree! I tried to sneak and take a pick while he was cleaning out the vacuum. He rolled his eyes at me when he heard the camera snap. LOL!

 The Lego movie---HILARIOUS!

Please tell me why again should I be concerned with JLo's body? I can't believe this stuff makes magazine covers or magazines period.

I watched this movie years ago and loved it. I discovered I loved some of the soundtrack even more. I LOVE this the "Song for Bob". It's so hauntingly sad yet beautiful! It really captures the tragic character.

Soccer camp! They took a cool action shot of my little girl. Glad we at least got one because I'm certain she spent most of the time talking on the sidelines. Shes such a socialite! LOL!

I ordered this all the way from Australia for $6. I saw this movie when I was a kid (TV edited version of course) and it was hilarious. It's so campy it's ridiculous. I can't believe I used to have a crush on George Hamilton. LOL!!!

Speaking of TV crushes why did I just see the movie Sixteen Candles for the first time a few weeks ago????  I'm so LATE!!! Why didn't anyone ever tell me about Jake Ryan??? He's so dreamy!!! LOLLLLL! I'm a sucker for the sensitive/masculine type. I married one (wink)!

I'm a voracious reader!!! Between the library and buying used books my queue stays full---too full. Here's some of my recommended reads......

 An Amazing book!!!----I've got my word for the year and look forward to reading it annually for a new word!!!

I LOVE Philip Yancey--hands down. A very profound author!!! His writing is so thought provoking.

I'm a HUGE Napoleon Hill Fan and am even part of a mastermind group which meets weekly. This book is a TREASURE!!! I'm so glad I ran across it!!!

Guess who scored this book for only $8 and in excellent condition. I LOVE buying used books. I ALWAYS hunt down the best bargains. Paying retail is against my religion! LOL!  It's not the newest version but I'm happy just the same. It's great. I love industry methods!

I LOVE this song! Heard it at church a few weeks ago. It's my theme song for this year!!!! Well that and this one.....

Sewing Jots and Tittles 12.3.13

Oh, it's been FOREVER since I did my routine "Sewing Jots and Tittle" Post! Between my transition to Full-Time-Sewing-Business-Woman and my client work load I've been pretty swamped. But I can't neglect these posts.  You know I've got a brain that never sleeps. Here' all of the thoughts that have been plaguing my mind....

(My sewing room was converted into a bedroom for my Aunt visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday. That means I didn't sew for 2 days but she ended up being really comfortable! Who knew?)

NON-SEWING

 (You can't take some people to a wedding.....they hoard all the favors! LOL!)

 (A great detergent recipe. These 3 boxes and 3 bars of Kirks Castle soap. Cut up soap or put in the food processor and mix with these 3 powders.  Voila! Lots of detergent that will last forever! I like to use it with my liquid detergent to stretch it!)

 ( Lionfish at a local aquarium!!! Beautiful creatures! They're so fancy looking!!! Love the colors! Would provide great inspiration for a dress.)

 (The Octopus is my favorite ocean creature! I love this painting I spotted in St. Augustine, FL)

(Saw "The Great Gasby" only for the fashions---that's the worst story ever! I didn't like it when I read it in High School. But I did fall in love with this song! I only know and like one other Sia song. Didn't know her voice was so strong! The lyrics are pretty strong too. I'm assuming she's metaphorically speaking! LOL!)

 (The Tic-Tac-Toe matches between the Hubby and "Wee-One" can get intense. They're so hilarious to watch. The "Wee-One's" pretty good!

(Took the "Wee-One" to see Disney on Ice along with her Godsis and GodMom. It took me back to my childhood! It was great!!!!)

 (Don't you judge me! Yes it was cold enough to wear socks with my sparkle toe flats. It was a one time thing. Don't worry I promise I won't be the woman going to WalMart in rollers! LOL!)

 (Don't you just love the specialty food section in some stores. You can get som many fancy products from other countries! Jams, chips, candies and nuts! LOVE it!)

 (Someone just got a new pair of jeggings. You can't tell her she ain't hot stuff! No seriously, you can't. She won't believe you! LOL!!!)

 (A pay-phone!!!! At least I was excited until I realized the phone was missing. )

(Oh, these two! They're hilarious together. I love to watch them. They're attached at the hip---or in this case at the back! LOL!)

(In a thrift shop testing out the golf clubs. Thank God there wasn't a ball involved LOL! Moments like these  ALWAYS make me happy. My daughter's got the best Daddy in the world, just like I did:)

(My Hubby did the "Voiceover" for the commercial for our church's Christmas production that will be starting tomorrow (doesn't he have a great voice?).  Anyhow, it's an interactive journey back in time to the night Christ was born.  He's also one of the actors too. This is a huge event at our chuch and thousands visit. It's really awesome!)

 (These things are great! I love dehydrated vegetables!)

 (I use coconut oil on my skin and an added perk is I never have to check the weather outside. If it's cold the coconut oil will be a solid and if not less so. What a great dual use!)

(The Wee-One's Grandma was one of the family members in town for Thanksgiving. When she's around all bets are off and rules go out the window--as it should be! LOL! Here's the Wee-One in Grandma's glasses and holding/drinking Grandma's soda---a soda she wouldn't otherwise get! You gotta love Grandparents!!!! They're the other fun, older parents! LOL!)
