Touching a Hot Stove....

I've never been one for doing risky things! I was the kid who (usually) heeded the first warning (on some occasions I may have needed more LOL!). The "Don't Touch the Stove" warning, I ALWAYS heeded with unquestioning seriousness. My curiosity wasn't worth the pain of a blistered and burned hand. But despite my careful nature, every "blue moon" there comes a time where I want to defy all of the warnings in my head and venture out to try something daring. Something that could possibly "burn" me.

Such is true with McCall's 6396. I have been wanting to make this dress since last year when I picked up the pattern and the perfect fabric for it. This is the cutest pattern and I'd planned to lengthen it a bit and add it to my Winter wardrobe but never got around to making it.

(This is the gorgeous plaid I bought for the project!)

Fast forward to now and I'm ready to sew it up but just realized that  it's got 2 negative reviews on Sewing Pattern Review.com. The explanations for why the pattern doesn't work are pretty clear and concise. But there's a part of me that still wants to give it a shot and if necessary even re-draft the skirt part, which is described as the most problematic part. I don't really have a good reason for possibly walking into this potential mess---- besides the fact that I REALLY want this dress and I feel like taking on a CHALLENGE. My rationale is that the reviews describe the bodice as being fine but it's just the skirt that's the problem. Looking at the pattern---I can see that. Surely I can do something to make this skirt work for me. Well I'm gonna try and take on this--before December ends. Hopefully I won't get burned.......

What's the "Riskiest" sewing project that you've taken on? What was the outcome? Do tell!!!

  1. I also love this pattern and think that it could be turned into something really sophisticated and special! I say go for it! Even if it doesn't work out the way you want it to, I bet you'll still learn something from it... After all, that's the whole point of your 10,000 hour challenge! Good luck! I'm looking forward to seeing what you make :)))

  3. I think go for it too. I think Marybeth is right - you'll learn something and maybe it won't be so bad. The skirt doesn't look so problematic. The riskiest sewing project was a wedding dress for my sister. It was about 23 years ago when I'd just been sewing for a few years. It was the copy of a designer dress and we went into the shop to try on and spy. i made it up and it looked good - but not before I triple stitched the satin skirt to the top but inside out! It took me three hours to unpick it! Lucky my sister was a pretty straight size 12 because I made it straight from the pattern. I didn't know how to make the back draped 'tail' piece but the woman in Gardams Fabric Shop told me how. I'm still amazed I did it!

  4. I like the pattern too. And I think I like problem-solving when it comes to sewing. My best projects are when I am forced to think for myself rather than follow the directions. Good luck! I can't wait to see your finished dress.

  7. I don't get scared away from patterns just because they get a bad review. I will, however, use the reviews to make adjustments in the pattern beforehand.

  8. I think risk taking is such a relative thing. I'm not a daredevil when it comes to my physical safety but I'm a good learner. So I agree with giving it a try, especially since I think it wold look wonderful on you.

  9. Go for it!
Every project that I take on has some level of risk to it... Because, when I'm sewing (really, every part of my life) I jump in feet first. It's always much later when I start thinking and asking questions.
