Manipulating Fabric.....

I'm currently waiting for my copy of Manipulating fabric to arrive by mail. I believe I checked this book out from the library years ago and ran across it again when I was at Barnes and Noble last weekend.

It was pretty cool getting "reacquainted" with the book and since I'm a bit more seasoned in my sewing the book really appealed to me. I plan to dabble a little more with draping and patternmaking so it would be pretty cool to know how to achieve desired results with fabric. This book will serve as a great supplement to my draping and patternmaking books.  Whether it's fancy gathers or pleats--its' pretty cool to be able to think of a "fabric affect" and know exactly how to achieve it. Here's one of the pics of fancy gathers I managed to take before my camera battery died.

So hopefully I'll get this book within the next few days. It's $30 if you buy it new but I ordered it from Half.com for $13. As soon as I get it I'll be sure to do a review. I absolutely can't wait until it gets here. Does anyone out there have this book? What are your thoughts?

Also, I'm currently working on this blouse in the short sleeve wrap view. Hope to review in a couple of days!!! Happy Sewing to you.....

  1. I do have this book, and there are so many drool-inducing ideas in it that I'm too overwhelmed to pick just one! Actually, I've been meaning to try some of the smocking techniques (perhaps the Canadian smocking?) on a large rectangle of fabric and then try using the finished piece as the neck piece on a pattern like this:

I have a couple RTW tanks with fancy details at the neckline, and I wear them to death under tops that are too low cut for work (like wrap tops). They can easily take an outfit up a notch.

  2. I just bought this book last month! I loved reading it but haven't put any of the techniques to work yet. My favourite chapters were on tucks, flounces and ruffles. And godets. So cool!! It's great for inspiration and thinking outside the limits of a pattern. (I also bought mine for cheap on Etsy - $10 if I remember correctly!) You'll be able to rack up tons of sewing hours with this book :)

  3. I have this book. Such a repository of knowledge. the best part is the style of author which eases the reader into the techniques. I have tried tucks flounces, and ruffles so far and they all turned out pretty good. In fact whenever i get plain fabrics without any print or texture, i refer to this book to add some interest element to the fabric and it works.

  4. I bought this book a long time ago. I should get reacquainted. I always thought that just practicing these techniques would improve my sewing skills. It really is an amazing resource. I haven't commented lately, but I wanted you to know that I just love all your recent sewing triumphs!
