I was suprisingly able to scoop this little baby up at my local Jo-Ann's fabrics. I have no idea when they started carrying Ginghers (I knew Hancock fabrics did) but I think it's great. I got them for 50% off and I think and additonal discount. They ended up only costing $17 which is great. I plan to collect an 8" Gingher Dressmaker shears sometime in the near future, just for collection sake. I've always wanted one and now I don't have to pay big bucks for it.
(Note: These work great when you are actually careful enough not to cut through your fabric. Here I am trimming extra hem off coverstitched jegging leg. Put a hole right in. Sometimes I just amaze myself (rolling eyes). Definitely user error---LOL!!!)
What about you, own a pair of applique scissors? Are you a big Gingher fan???
You got a great deal on those scissors! I believe they are also called duck-bill scissors...LOL! You will like the 8" sewing scissors. I'm a scissors junkie...ginghers are my go-to scissors, and Wiss are my sentimental scissors because they belonged to my grandmother, who, along with my mom, taught me how to sew.
ReplyDeleteThey look more pelican bill to me! I wonder why they're that shape?
ReplyDeleteI'm only a scissors girl and I own several pairs of duck billed scissors...couldn't sew without them. Oh and Ginghers are my go to scissors.
ReplyDeleteI'm a scissor girl too and own two pair of those duck bills. I cut holes in everything too when I first started using them :)
ReplyDeleteGreat deal! I can never figure out if the bill goes up or down. It's supposed to push the fabric away from the blade to keep you from cutting through it. Whenever I use them correctly I love them. But I have "holey" days too lol
ReplyDeleteI have a regular pair of gingher scissors (the regular size for cutting fabric) and have loved them for years! And I actually have applique scissor on my list to buy for my own coverstitching inaccuracy, lol.
ReplyDeleteThose are wonderful to use. Another one I like is the Fiskars spring action rag quilter's scissors. I use those a lot for snipping curved seams, etc because the blades are short.
ReplyDeleteI have the applique scissors and love them. I also really like the 5" gingher "tailor's snips"or as Gingher is now calling them 5 inch knife edge sewing scissors. Kenneth King recommended them when I took a class from him. They easily and accurately will cut through lots of layers.
ReplyDeleteOther than those two Gingher scissors, I am devoted to Kai Scissors. They cut through everything like BUTTAH.
Oh, those duck bills! They are the go-to babies on the table by my right hand. Partly the bent handle, partly how they slide into places and do the job. I have to remember to NOT use them to trim threads; got a cheap pair of cuticle scissors for that job. Now all I have to do is remember!
ReplyDeleteGingher scissors are so great, I have two shears I use mainly for fabric, I will love to own this applique too.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to own a pair of duck-bill applique scissors! Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a pair in a left-handed version. If anyone knows a source or manufacturer I would love to hear it.
ReplyDeleteOh boy that's sucks to put a hole in what looks like a great pair of denim look leggings! Congratulations on your new pair of appliqué scissors!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE my duckbill scissors!! I own several pairs of Ghinger scissors, including some left-handed shears (I am a righty who cuts left-handed, go fig!), but the duckbills and the curved embroidery are my all-time favorites. I have cut my fair share of holes in my garments with those suckers too! It happens :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I know I'm late to the party, but congratulations on your sewing biz!! It's got to be pretty exciting to be your own boss doing something that you love. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up! I wish you much luck!
I used to do a TON of needlework, so collected lots of pairs of embroidery scissors. I had such a love affair with my collection of Gingher embroidery scissors, that I eventually bought two pairs of their dressmaker's shears. The first was a lighter weight pair, which I never really liked. I figured it was the lighter weight, and sprung for the heavy-weight, all metal version at JoAnn's. And, sadly, I *hate* them! They're too heavy and stiff, despite proper care and lubrication, and they make my hand hurt just about every time I use them. Unfortunately, they also came with a flaw on one of the blades (not visible, but definitely there, as they 'catch' just a bit). I should have returned them, but the store where I got them is 40+ miles away. I'm still searching for the perfect dressmaker's shears, but in the meantime,I vastly prefer the cheap pair that I've had forever. They're easy on the hands and do a much better cutting job than my Ginghers.
