A Slow Creep to the Finish Line.....

(Here's the culprit that's been frustrating me---The nearly finished peplum top in black twill with a cute snake skin patterned belt I hope to wear with it. It's pretty much done I just need to resolve a back fitting issue.)

It's so agonizing to be so close to finishing a project but yet still feel a bit away. I feel like I've been working on NewLook 6130 forever!!! First there was thedisappearing denim design fabric snafu I had that made me put the project on hold until I could find another fabric of choice. Then I rushed to get it done this weekend and  ran into a fitting issue I didn't anticipate. I rarely have to do a narrow back adjustment but it looks like this pattern may require it. I'm still not sure if it's an issue with the fabric or pattern just yet. Even worse is I made a muslin but didn't add the zipper. I would've been able to spot the fitting issue had I added the zipper. Argh!!! I don't feel like trying to figure it out. This was supposed to be my quick and easy project!!!! I feel like a toddler right now having a tantrum. Sigh. Argh! Pout. Sigh....and pout again.

Well I suppose these types of frustrations are quite common to any seamstress. Which you and I both know they very well are. I'm cool now since I vented my frustrations. Thanks for listening (smile). I'm determined to see this project through to the end. So I'm putting on my big girl britches and going back to it. I like a challenge and nothing matures you more as a seamstress than taking a problem head on. I'll figure out the problem, resolve it and then move on.

I'll have this top ready before the week's end. I've got one more piece to sew and it's on to Fall sewing. It hasn't even gotten a bit cold here yet. I don't expect it to for a while but I still want to start my wardrobe so I'll be ready when it does. I'll unveil my Fall/Winter sewing plans in my next post.

  1. Victoria,
Not that I'm happy 'bout your troubles with this pattern, but I thought maybe I'm losing my touch. I started this pattern~ the sleeveless top and skirt~ back in July, and I'm still not finished. I got so frustrated with it, that I thought I would put it down for a while. I did go back to it to make the adjustments.
I honestly believe this pattern is mis-sized. I cut ridiculous sizes for myself, which I should've listened to my instinct. But, I went by the tissue measurements against mine.
The top is still too big across the upper chest; even though I shortened the back length before I cut the fabric, it was still too long. I had to remove the peplum to shorten it. I've since put it down for a while ( for a long while, hee-hee).
I will revisit it. As a matter of fact, I pulled it out again last week, just haven't had the umph to get back at it.

There are others that commented on this as well.
I didn't mean for this to sound discouraging, but seeing your post has given me a glimmer of hope. Much success to you and I look forward to seeing your finished outfit. ;o)

    1. Thanks Alethia! I don't know how I missed your post but thanks for confirming that the pattern is problematic. It's drafted a bit weird!!!! I did my normal 12 bodice and grade to 14 at waist. Everything fits great except the upper back. It's almost like I'll have to remove a dart wedge out of it and then it will fit properly. At this point I'm not sure if I want to do that. I just may switch to the Vogue version instead. I don't like to waste my time fixing oddly drafted patterns.

  2. Funny, I got close to finishing this same pattern this weekend and found that I need to remove a couple inches from the top back. It fit around the bust line, but I feel like the back just goes straight up from there, and for a high neckline it should slope in toward the neck some. I think it is a pattern issue.

    1. THANKS ISIDORE!!!! That's EXACTLY the problem!!! The upper back is oddly drafted. Whew....nice to know I'm not the only one with that problem. Yeah, I'll have to do surgery as well and reconstruct that for a better fit. Thanks for saving my sanity!!!!

  3. It looks lovely on the dress form. I hope you'll be able to get it finished because it is such a trendy style that would be fun to wear this Fall. I am sure you can do it!

    1. Thanks Karin! I think I'm well on my way now since I've realized with help (thanks Isidore) that it's a pattern draft issue!!!! This is exactly why I'm embarking on learning pattern drafting myself. It just makes things easier!!!

  5. Well I'll add my two cents worth too. I too seem to have been working on this pattern forever. I haven't sewn with NL patterns oftern so I made the adjustments I usually make with the Big 4. I also added extra length to the center front and added 1" "in case" side seams. Needless to say nearly all of that had to be remeoved and I feel like I've made this to twice. It took me two days to finish hand basting the hem. All that said, whenever I do get it finished -- hopefully later today -- it is going to be absolutely beautiful!

    1. KMQ, glad you made it through your top despite the delays. I can't wait to see it. I've sewn a fair deal of NL patterns & don't recall having this problem, I think. I think I'll just make the corrections on the top and finish it. I'm pretty much done anyway!!!!

  7. I already made 2 versions of this pattern. For the back I used about 1" SA and increased it to about 1.5" from waist down to compensate for the sway back and another 1/4" on the sides from arm-hole to the waist. So far I have had success with this pattern, and I am planning on making it again.I have a broad back maybe that's why I didn't notice any other issues. I mentioned somewhere in my first review that it was drafted big but I thought I had lost weight lol.....Just do all your tweaking and you will love it.

  8. I started tracing this NL pattern only to find that my envelope was missing a full sheet of patterns. I have the bodice front/back, sleeves, and skirt, but no pants or peplums. I called Simplicity and should be receiving a replacement soon. I'm usually very organized in my sewing room, so I am convinced it was either a faulty pattern or someone returned it without one of the sheets. Needless to say, this has stalled my progress on the pattern; I've moved on to something else.

  9. Lovely top! Despite the challenges you may be having, this top looks so worth it! I've not made a peplum top yet. I have two in my sewing que. One for end of summer (to be worn next year) and a winter one. Good luck and can't wait to see your results!

  10. I have been considering this pattern (so cute!) but after your troubles in your post and others in the comments I'm not sure I want to step up. Thank you for sharing! That top looks adorable on your dress form.
