My New Best Friend!

Before leaving town for Alaska I couldn't get a few hem alterations finished in time for a client. I was so bummed about this. I always like to return alterations in a timely manner. Fortunately it was a regular client and that wasn't a problem.

I'm embarrassed to say the reason was I couldn't properly thread my blind hemmer right. Actually I couldn't thread it at all. If any of you have seen a blind hemmer needle, than you'd know it is curved. You have to thread it through the eye under the curved end of the needle. This is a tight spot to access!
(My blind hemmer. Sorry, no close up but if you look to the left you can see part of the curved needle )

For the life of me, I think I spent and hour trying and just couldn't get it. How embarrasing!!! So I had to enlist the help of a very common and not so new notion. Ms. Needle Threader.
( Wow, fancy--it comes with a cutter! It's been so long since I noticed one of these.)

And to think I actually used to be snobby and thought I was too good or too skilled to need the likes of Ms. Needle Threader. Seriously, I've always prided myself on being able to handle the task myself. Well that was until I met the eye of a curved needle!!! So I've got a new "Best" sewing friend. What sewing notion is your favorite at the moment???

  1. My Clover double tracing wheel has been my favourite sewing gadget from the day I bought it (I sew a lot of BurdaStyle patterns). Coming up a very close second are my Chacopel chalk pencils for marking.

  11. Notions are the tools that make sewing easier. I have learned to always be on the lookout for the newest gadget in unusual places. I found my new favorite notion at a quilt show.

It is also a seam ripper, but more specifically a "surgical steel" seam ripper. The blade is a different shape and much more accurate. Take a look here and here, for examples.

Be on the lookout to snap one of these up. I recently noticed them on the notions wall at Joann's.

    Have a safe trip!

  12. My favorite sewing tool is the Chakoner, a chalk marker with a tiny wheel. It's a great marking tool! I bought it a few years ago at a Lyla Messinger seminar. I don't know how I ever got along without it.

  13. Blind hemmers are amazing, lucky you!

My favorite right now and for a long time is my white tailors chalk that vanishes with steam.
