Wrench in the Plans/ Ghosts of Mother's Day Past....

First of all Happy Mother's Day to all of you Wonderful Mom's out there! That's all of you who make a difference in the lives of children or friends whether they're biologically yours or not. Thanks for making a great impact and for your sacrifice.

Well today was an excellent day despite the little adventure I had on yesterday afternoon. It's unfortunate that I had no "new" Mother's day dress to wear today. So I didn't get to wear the shoes I showed in my last post. It's not the end of the world and it's the least of my worries since my "baby" is now in the shop. Yes, "boo-hoo", my sewing machine is in the shop!!! Yesterday afternoon I was nearly 85% done with my dress when I noticed my sewing machine began making a clicking sound. Well I figured out it was probably the bobbin or I my needle had dulled. Well after changing these 2 things and even taking out the bobbin case and clearing out any thread under my machine it still kept clicking and even started to jam when I sewed. So I knew right then and there that was the end of my sewing for the day, especially when I tried the back up machine and it wouldn't cooperate with me---that's a whole other story.

So I did what any good Mom would do, I immediately called the only man I trust with servicing my machine. His name is Mr. Smiley (that's his name for real, no joking) and he's the owner of Smiley Sewing center. I called him and arranged to drop it off in the next couple of hours. He lovingly took my machine and I won't have a prognosis until Monday afternoon. I hope a tune-up is all that's needed. I can't function without my sewing machine:(.

So that whole event left me without a dress so I had to dig deep in my closet to find a replacement. I have other cute dresses I've sewn before but I noticed a dress I'd worn once back in 2009. It was my Mother's Day dress from that year and I'd never thought to wear it again. Now that's the thing I can't quite wrap my mind around. This isn't the first time that's happened. I don't know why I make dresses for certain occasions that I end up only wearing once. Well that's understandable with a formal gown but this is just a basic dress. So feeling a little guilty I thought I'd give it another go. After trying it back on I figured nothing was too wrong with it although I felt that all of the pink made me look like a "Black version of Barbie" LOL!  And I guess it wasn't so bad. Here's the dress.....It's NewLook 6557 worn with a fuschia crocheted bolero.....

But I've noticed I've made a habit of these "one time wear dresses". Here's my Mother's Day dress from last year. I haven't wore it sense.

Just to add fuel to the fire---here's my Easter dress from last year. I don't even want to look at it again. And a good deal of work went into this one....

What's up with me? Could it be my fashion choices have changed all that much? Are they out of style? I don't know what's up with me. But I have to admit that it's weird to walk into your closet and be "haunted" by dresses of the "not-so-distant past". Does this happen to any of you?  Do you unintentionally make "one time wear" dresses?
So despite not finishing my dress and my "baby" being in the shop, Mother Day's was great and deep down inside I'm happy I got the opportunity to wear an oldie. I forgot that I blogged about this dress a year ago and like the dress I didn't finish yesterday, I was inspired to make it because of a pair of shoes too!LOL!  So what can you say, things always have a way of working themselves out. I have to admit, at least my LOVE for the shoes remains the same......
Happy Mother's Day!!!!!!

  1. Oh, I'm giving your machine good vibes. At first I thought you were going to say something like your machine actually ate the dress you were working on and now it's totally wrecked. It sucks not to have had your lovely new garment, but you can finish it for the next fun occasion, right?

And I'm not much of a 1 time wearer, unless the item doesn't work well :-) I do try and make things that are for as many occasions as possible. I'm also not very formal. I sense you like to dress up fancy more than I do.

  2. Thanks for the good vibes K-Line! I think that's it. I want to start dressing down just a little more so I don't get myself in a rut with some of the clothes I wear. But then again, I buy clothes that sometimes I become disinterested in. Maybe I need to figure out my style a little more?

  3. I wish I had a Mr. Smiley. When my machine went down last year I took it to Don's Sewing Machines. He said that he couldn't even look at it for six weeks. I was frantic, my husband told me to go buy a new machine. I think he just couldn't stand to hear me cry and whine for six weeks.

  4. What a GREAT back up outfit! It looks really cute. Love, love, love the shoes! Hope you had a GREAT Mother's Day.

  5. Wow, Jane! The thought of 6 weeks without my machine makes me shiver. I'd have to be committed! LOL! You've got a great Hubby:)

  6. When I first read your post it made me think of the first day of school. Even if last years book bag was fine or the coat still fit you always got a new one. Easter too, every year a new dress. I haven't been sewing enough to say if I am a one time wearer but my RTW's get plenty of reuse. I hope that when I get to be as good as you I enjoy wearing out my creations just as much. All of those dresses are lovely. Hoping the baby will be back soon.

  7. Happy Mother's Day to you too! I hope your machine is an easy fix. So nice to be able to walk into your closet and have a few dresses to choose from. I've really increased my sewing productivity since I decided to blog about sewing. So when I notice I'm not wearing something I make, I tend to give it away, knowing someone else may find it useful and knowing I will soon replace it with something else :)

  8. Happy Mother's Day!
I love your pink suit, and would have worn it to shreads last summer had it been in my closet. I starting thinking immediately how great it would look with my flat sandals. Maybe you just need to pick from your wardrobe in rotation...but then, a warm summer only lasts a month up North so I do tend to go nuts trying to give every single stitch I own an airing during those intense days to justify their storage for 10 months!

  9. Oh, you definitely should be wearing those dresses again and again. It was your Easter dress that inspired me to buy that particular pattern, and I have returned to your post about it several times for another look.

A couple of times a year I might pull out a outfits for a week or two...that makes me wear the less worn items and not just grab the go-to items every time.

  10. Oh poor you! To have your sewing machine pack up at the end of a project before you were done- with a deadline! I hope Mr Smiley can fix it soon.

All these dresses are beautiful and flattering on you. I don't think they are out of style either. It would be better to wear them on the school run than to let them languish in your closet!

Finally, the shoes are pretty awesome.

  11. Hope your machine feels better soon.

  12. That is not a good way to finish a project :-). Hopefully you'll both be recovered soon, and without leaving an arm with Mr Smiley.

About the puzzling phenomenon of the closet pit for special-event dresses. I don't think it's that they're out of date, all of them look perfectly wearable to me. And look good on you, I mean. But could it be something about deadline-induced stress, that you don't feel friendly towards them by the time you finish them? Or are you so focused on the special event part that you forget that you're deliberately making dresses you could be wearing otherwise?

Would it be worth making a deliberate effort to wear these special-occasion dresses at a couple of set intervals after the occasion, just to get into the habit of seeing them as everyday possibilities? A deliberate twice in the first month might be all you need to prime the pump? Are you wearing one today :-)?

  13. I tend to make things which can be worn in a variety of situations-so I don't really have any lonely pieces. I love all your clothes and cannot imagine being able to choose from so many different dresses :-) Hope your machine is back soon!

  16. Ohhhhh, so sorry about your machine! It's my nightmare that my machine will break down some day. I'm terrified of that happening.

  17. So sorry to hear about your machine and hope you get it back home soon!

I can relate with you regarding your dresses! (although I don't make many dresses), it's basically anything I make for myself. I tire very quickly with my clothing and unfortunately at this age, I'm still trying to figure out my style. So if it's any assistance for you, I've given up trying. Now I just try to keep it a little bit sexy, a little bit classic and a whole lot of fun! You can't go wrong with that!

  18. I wonder if the association of a dress with a holiday makes it seem not-quite-right for regular days?

I've made myself 3 dresses and, sad to say, have yet to wear any of them! Wrong style? Wrong fit? Who knows...

  19. Pretty outfit and shoes! I remember when I had to put my machine in the shop and I didn't have a back up. I'm getting emotionally just talking of it :) My machine is like my BIBLE, I can't do without it!!! Hope you are back ripping the runway in no time!!!

  21. How frustrating that your machine broke down at such a crucial moment, but then it always happens at the worst possible time! Your pink dress is beautiful and definitely deserved an outing. Keep digging deep into your wardrobe to give all your lovely but little worn dresses another chance!

  22. I hope your baby is back home or will be soon. I love your alternate choice, it looks great and you look pretty in pink! It seems you had a great Mother's Day in spite of it.

  23. Well, I think ALL the dresses are worth wearing again! Sorry about your machine. I just left my serger with the repair man yesterday. I don't even know what to do with myself!
Hope you get it back soon.
    I love that name...Mr. Smiley

  24. I know I'm super late to comment on this post, but it actually took your post from today to jog my thought process on it. I think you (and maybe me) look at your projects as art pieces. They're planned for a certain event, they invoke a certain mood, and you love them when you wear them for that event. Then it's over, like the party or Mother's Day, and you don't think of them again because you're on to the next art project. Artists don't paint the same thing twice.

So maybe instead of making an art piece for a special event, you consider making art pieces for Mondays, or Thursdays. That way you can enjoy them more often? Just a thought. I'm trying to apply that to my own way of sewing, too.
