Ten Thousand Hours of Sewing

NYC Trip details----Day 2

Yesterday was my second day in the city. I was a littleunsatisfied with my fabric purchases and thought I’d go looking a little moreto make sure I hadn’t overlooked anything. In addition to that I realized theFather and Daughter “Masquerade” themed Banquet was quickly approaching and Ihadn’t decided on my daughters dress yet. I’m still a little uncertain on thestyle but I know I want the color to be bold—black and turquoise or purple andblack. Plus I needed a bunch of feathers to use for her mask. I passed severaltrim shops but because I didn’t have a fabric it was hard to pick the rightfeathers for the project. I’m hoping to find some feathers that coordinate withher fabric.

So I set out a little before noon to venture out to thegarment district. I tried to steer clear of shops visited and I managed to finda side street of different fabric shops. As soon as I walked in the store myeyes caught a beautiful fabric which I knew would be perfect for my daughtersdress. After looking at other options I settled on the first one I saw andpicked up 3 yards. It’s a taffeta type fabric with an embossed velvet pattern andit’s not superior quality but it will work for basically what will be a onetime wear dress. My daughter grows so fast, she’ll be lucky to get another wearout of another special occasion dress.

I haven’t finalized my decision on the styling just yet. Mybrain is flooded with some cute ideas. I’ll look again at available patternsand possibly mixing and matching a few pieces to create a desired look.

I went into another store and managed to pick up 2 pieces. Ifound a gorgeous medium weight spandex in a rich teal color that I realizedwould be perfect for a dress I plan to make for a Gala in April. The fabric isso sublime!!!

(Ok, next time I photograh this it will be outdoors. The fabric for my dress is a rich, deep teal color. Again indoor light doesn't do it justice)

I’m happy that I found a great fabric. Now I need to choosea good pattern. Of course I also picked up a cute knit print to round out thepurchase.

After finding the fabrics I needed I headed to find sometrims I could possibly use for my daughters dress & mask. I headed over toM& J Trims for a quick look.

It’s a trim lovers paradise. There were trims from floor toceiling literally. I didn’t find the feathers I needed, although there was afall full of them but I did find a cute velvet trim for her dress—possibly touse in the waistline.

(So many trims!!! I loved the decorated masks. I was trying to borrow some ideas for my daughter's mask. Hers won't be as ornate as these.)

Well that concluded my visit to the fabric district. And I waspretty satisfied with my purchases.I was quite satisfied and a little pooped from all the hours of walking.

I took one final outing for the day to the Natural History Museum before heading to Whole foods for dinner. I'd visited the museum before but forgot how huge it was. It was fun seeing the exhibits.

Here's one of the exhibits I enjoyed seeing. I believe it was on early Asian inhabitants. I can't rember the time period or the name of the people but I fell in love with this robe. The blends and woven colors were spectacular and the trims were so ornate! You have to admire clothing from other cultures both past and present.

Well this about concludes my quick 2 1/2 day get away to NYC. I made it safely back home later this evening. Glad I was able to go and get fitted for my custom dressform, grab some great fabric for future projects, and just enjoy the sights and sounds of the big city. Looking forward to future mini getaways like this in the future!!!

NYC Trip details--- Day 1

It’s really nice being back in the Big Apple. My Hubby &I spent a week here a few years back to celebrate our anniversary. It’s nicebeing back for a quickie trip. Needless to say not much has changed. It’s stillthe high energy and busy city that I remembered. I love the energy, it’sinvigorating!!!

On yesterday, I made it into town pretty early. I’m happy Idid. I flew into Newark, NJ and had to take the bus to Manhattan. By the time Igot done with that and re-familiarizing myself with the subway system it wasnearly noon. Fortunately, my hotel room became available early so I was able to drop my bags and do some fabric shopping before my 4:30pm appointment with Andyfrom Andy’s Dressforms.

Again, I’ve visited the garment district before so I wasn’tall that surprised by the plethora of fabric shops. They were everywhere and Ijust took my time browsing through most. Surprisingly after shopping severalhours I didn’t find too much that tickled my fancy. I just don’t like to buyfabric just to be doing so. I’ve already got tons and am actually in the process of downsizing. Despite my purchasing reservations it was so much fun to be surrounded by so much fabric!

I actually ended up finding one piece that I loved!!!! As Imentioned in an earlier post, fabric shopping for me is quite intuitive. Assoon as I saw this piece I LOVED it!!! It’s some polyester knit but it’s inbrown, off-white, and black. This photo doesn't do it justice but I'm thinking of making a fitted dress in this fabric. It will be fabulous!!!

I ended up picking up a few pieces out of the bargain binfrom the same store. I’vegot no shame when it comes to hunting bargain fabric. They were also knits. One is a rayon/cotton/spandex blendin raspberry, and the other two are neat shades of blue. One is "peacock" blue and the other is an "ice blue" color. Nothing special about them except the color. They'll make cute tops or dresses with neat design ideas. I love color!!!

I then went by Andy’s Dressforms for my fitting appointment.I found his shop nestled in a building with a strip mall of other shops.

Andy was a very nice Indian man with a thick accent. He waswearing a ribbed tank top and apron and the front of him was covered in whatlooks like plastering material. He was hard at work when I arrived. His shop isa tiny thing lined wall to wall with various sized dressforms.

He was very gracious and welcoming. I explained to him thatI came all the way to NYC so I could get a custom made dressform. Prior to meeting we'd spoken on the phone a few times. We talkedover options and I decided on the standard dressform. He took my measurementsand we discussed the issue of my short waist and high rear which he said hewould use a little extra stuffing for my form. I’ll send him a side profile picture to help him in sculpting my rear whenhe makes my form. We concluded the visit with a little chit chat and a promisedfinished product by next month. I was encouraged to call and constantly remindhim so it gets done on time. I will definitely do that. I don’t think things would’ve went so smoothlyhadn’t Amanda given me such helpful advice from her own experience. Thanks somuch Amanda!!!!

I was pretty satisfied after that visit and my feet were alittle tired from walking around all day. I headed back to my hotel and aroundthe corner from it spotted this store. It's called Bra Smyth and their motto is

they're “the bra fitting experts”. Ireally despise shopping for bras and finding the right style and fit is alwaystime consuming. I thought I’d give them a try. Well I wasn’t disappointed. The firstbra they gave me fit like a charm. I discovered I had my cup size right but wasa size smaller in circumference. The downside was the $78 price tag. Just a little much for my taste but it wasfun being professionally fitted. And we all know how IMPORTANT having the right undergarments are to the fit of one's clothes. They're a worthy investment.

By the end of all of the shopping I was starving. I headed to a localmarket for some fruit and then on to a nearby Whole Foods Market. I’m soJEALOUS! We don’t have one of these in Savannah so anytime I travel I have to visit.Well the choices were overwhelming.

So what do you do when you can’t make up your mind? Just buya little bit of everything. Nothing like a good dinner to go off of the hot bar.

Plus they had gluten/soy free carrot cake. I nearly lost my mind. Hadn't had that since before my gluten free days. I nearly lost my mind!!! I'll need to make my own.

I headed back to the hotel. I was so pooped that I ate, watched TV, andjust passed out sleep. What a fun and busy day. Next up, Sunday's details....

Going to NYC......Tommorrow!!!

Ok, this trip happened a little sooner than I imagined!!! It all started with me spotting cheap airline tickets this morning and the rest is history. I have a early 2 hour flight in the morning. I already called Andy from Andy's dressform to make sure he'd be available to assist me in being measured and choosing my dressform. The hotel is booked and I think I've covered all my bases. I'm SO excited and of course slightly nervous. It will be fun roaming around the city. It's been a few years since I've been but I'm sure once I'm back I'll remember quite alot and navigating will be super easy---a task made even easier with a smartphone (smile).

I'd love to meet up with any of my fellow bloggers if you plan to be in the area. I'll be in NYC until Monday so feel free to email me at tenthousandsewinghours@yahoo.com so we can make contact. I pretty much plan to live in the Garment District. I ran across THIS blog that may help direct me to some cool shops. But I plan to probably check most of them out. You never know what little treasures could be there. And of course once I have my fabric fix there's so many other cool places and museums to hit up. I'm looking forward to it!

Anywho, I have to finish my hair, do my little girl's and finish packing. A few loose ends to tie up but not many. My Hubby is a SAINT! He always holds down the "Fort" in my absence and is an excellent, hands-on Dad. He's been encouraging me to take this trip for sometime. So in a few hours I will. Look forward to blogging & talking with you from the big city.....

A Special Birthday Gift!

Today is my Birthday! I'm delighted to have lived 33 years and I feel so blessed!!! I've got my health, strength, a wonderful family, friends, job, church, etc. I'm just so thankful to God!!!!

I try to be SO low key on my birthday. I'm just not a big fuss kinda girl. Today I took the day off from work, a first, and just spent some time doing a little shopping and hanging out in Hilton Head Island. I quietly spent the evening with family. Sigh....it was just nice having some time to take a breather.

Usually I forgo all elaborate gifts. Of course I readily accept all Joann / Hancock Fabric/ & Fabric.com gift cards (so if you're feeling generous let me know---wink!). But aside from that I really feel I have everything I need.

But this year I've decided to treat myself. I'm finally going to get something I've wanted for quite some time. I've wanted a Custom Dress form from Andy's Dressform for quite some time. It's been on my Christmas Wishlist since 2009 (Btw, I'm happy to report that I was able to get all of the other items on my list over the last 2 years:)

The thought of having a body double is an exciting one!!! It would totally cut down on the time it takes me to do fittings. I sew ALOT of fitted clothing so as you can imagine sometimes there's alot of fittings and tweakings that have to take place. It will be nice to reduce the amout of "try-on's" I'll have to do. And also I'll be able to finally explore doing some draping and pattern drafting. A custom made dressform will definitely help take my sewing in a different direction and to an elevated level.

Well I'm ready to make it happen and I'm thinking about taking a mini trip to NYC to go handle the transaction personally. I'd love to visit the Big Apple again and get lost in the fabric district. We'll see. Well I'm super excited and am ready to move forward. Wish me luck......

Addicted to "Fit"!

I haven't bought a sewing book in quite a while but it's always refreshing to run across what seems to be a good one. I like to stay pretty up to date with the sewing references. Today while persuing Amazon.com I ran across a new book on Pattern/Muslin Fitting entitled "The Complete Photo Guide to Perfect Fitting" by Sarah Veblen. I did a "sneak peak" into the book and there seems to be extensinve information on how to adjust patterns and tweaking muslins. And better yet, it's chalked full of photos. For a visual learner such as myself, this is extremely helpful. I'm getting so giddy just thinking about. I strongly believe achieveing great fit is a science!

Fitting is a subject I love to study from all angles. Not just for myself but I sew for others and I love to learn new techniques and principles. I credit great books and some trial and error in helping me learn. I own so many diffferent books on Fitting. My top 5 favorites are:

(I LOVE this book! It's so "old school" but on point.)

(Much newer than the previous book but definitely a classic! When I first began sewing I never thought you could fit with the tissue. This step has made muslin-making for certain clothes an easier task.I love Palmer& Pletsch so much that I own the Jacket & Pants fitting books too!)

(Excellent pants fitting book! It's a Singer, what did you expect (smile)!)

(There's a newer version of this book but I like this one just fine. It has really indepth descriptions of why alterations are needed and at least 3 alteration options.)

(Another "Classic" that's invaluable")

I have to admit that it's taken me years to understand fit to the level that I do now. I don't know all there is by ANY means but I've come to know my body well enough to make fitted garments for myself. And I know enough to fit my clients.That's actually why I like to work with people because no two bodies are alike. Each project definitely brings it's own challenges and allows me to learn even more. Trust me my fitting books can get good use at times:)

As I mentioned before in an earlier post this year, I still have to overcome the challenge of creating pants that fit me. With a high derriere and short waist, I've got some fitting issues to overcome. I'm actually thinking of a different course of action---drafting a pants pattern, creating a muslin from it, and tweaking the fit. More about that in the future. But back to the topic at hand. Again, I love books on fitting patterns & muslins. I can't wait for my new purchase to arrive.

10 Essential Pants styles for every Woman!!!

I ran across the article "10 Pants Every Woman Should Own" and it's made me reevaluate my pants collection. I'm sad to report that out of the 10 pair of pants suggested I only have three of them, the Leggings, Trousers, & Wide Leg Pants. To be quite honest I don't wear alot of pants because it's hard to buy pants that are long enough for me, which is why I mainly wear capris (I LOVE me some capris!!!). Secondly, I haven't figured out how to sew pants that fit perfectly--although I'm getting very close. But this is my year and I guarantee I will be sewing all of my pants from this point on---I can feel it. I look forward to sewing up some of the "missing styles". I would love to have the "persona altering pants" and have always wanted some stretch pleather leggings! I have to admit, having different styles of pants in my wardrobe sure will help me in creating outfits. Remember, it's not about having a large quantity of clothes but about having enough different styles to maximize your wardrobe.

Preparing for the Masquerade!!!

I honestly can't tell you where time went. I'm sitting at the Anchorage airport making this post. I wanted to post sooner but was SWAMPED with work in Barrow, AK. Well I've finished the work and am headed back home. With this trip finished (nearly--still got a bit more flying to do), I can start thinking about some upcoming projects on the table.

Well it's almost time for another FATHER/DAUGHTER Banquet sponsored by our church. You may recall my Hubby & Daughter (the Wee-One) attended their very first one last year. You'll find the blog post HERE. I made her dress and loved the outcome!!!! The theme last year was about "Being a Princess". I made her a Asian style dress with a mandarin collar and piping out of brocade. So she was our "Little Asian Princess" on last year.

This year is a "Masquerade" theme. Needless to say our church is sponsoring it so it won't be racy or anything. So the wheels are turning and I'm thinking of all kinds of ideas to make an appropriate dress. I've got to do a bit more research on it and settle on my ideas. That shouldn't take long. Then there's picking the right pattern and fabrication. Fortunately I've got a bit of time. The event isn't until the 2nd week of March.

For starters I perused the patterns I already have to pick out a good baseline dress pattern that I could modify. I want the dress to be a subtle costume. This is what I grabbed. Again, I'm just brainstorming and nothing's set in stone.

But I have been thinking strongly about the purple and black color scheme. Or maybe teal and black and use some peacock feather to add a dash more color. One thing I plan to do is make her a matching mask to go with her dress. I've already grabbed the mask and look forward to creating it from scratch.

She's supposed to get one at the event, but there's no guarantee it will match her dress. You know me, I'm going for a complete look. I want her dress, mask, hair etc. to embody the masquerade theme. This will be a fun project. I think it will be more fun for the "Wee-One" since she LOVES to dress up in pretty dresses. I'm curious to see what I come up with.

Ok, I've got to go catch my flight now. But before I go let me leave you with an interesting pic. While we were up in Barrow, you might have heard that there was a major solar storm that caused some spectacular auroras . You can read more about it HERE. Guess who was able to check it out and get captured in a photo with it. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Here I am in this picture....

Yep, that's me standing in the snow looking at the auroras! Pretty cool, huh? It was a SPECTACULAR light show which changed from minute to minute. It was a nice way to end a long trip:)

My New Best Friend!

Before leaving town for Alaska I couldn't get a few hem alterations finished in time for a client. I was so bummed about this. I always like to return alterations in a timely manner. Fortunately it was a regular client and that wasn't a problem.

I'm embarrassed to say the reason was I couldn't properly thread my blind hemmer right. Actually I couldn't thread it at all. If any of you have seen a blind hemmer needle, than you'd know it is curved. You have to thread it through the eye under the curved end of the needle. This is a tight spot to access!

For the life of me, I think I spent and hour trying and just couldn't get it. How embarrasing!!! So I had to enlist the help of a very common and not so new notion. Ms. Needle Threader.

( Wow, fancy--it comes with a cutter! It's been so long since I noticed one of these.)

And to think I actually used to be snobby and thought I was too good or too skilled to need the likes of Ms. Needle Threader. Seriously, I've always prided myself on being able to handle the task myself. Well that was until I met the eye of a curved needle!!! So I've got a new "Best" sewing friend. What sewing notion is your favorite at the moment???

Oh the Places You'll Go.....

I had a bit of a flashback today. When I graduated from college some years back I received the Dr. Seuss' book "Oh the Places You'll Go" and it was signed by some of the co-workers from the Institute of which I was then an intern and am now employed. If you asked me back then, I wouldn't have thought I'd be taking research trips to Barrow, Alaska---one of the most extreme weather & remote locations I've ever visited. Well today I embarked upon my 4th Research trip and I'm currently spending the night in an Anchorage awaiting my last flight to Barrow in the morning. Life can take you to some pretty unexpected places some times. Oh the places indeed! Just a funny thought.....

Well as an overly-obsessed seamstress, no matter where I go, you know I'm going to be armed with sewing related materials of some sort. For this trip I've decided to take the time to revisit some great resources I have in my library---since I couldn't bring my sewing machine of course! LOL! I have a ton of DVD's and would like to take this time of "forced non-sewing" to learn new techniques and refresh my knowledge of old one's. So here's the resources I packed with me.

I of course packed my Threads Magazine Archive DVD-ROM containing 146 issues. It is jammed packed with great articles, pattern reviews, and supply suggestions. It's been a while since I browsed this DVD-ROM so it would be nice to get reacquainted. I also packed the Fit for Real People DVD's since I'll be taking up teaching sewing/fitting classes again upon my return. I'm EXTREMELY excited about giving lessons again! I've gotten pretty good at fitting my body and just want to review the basics for teaching purposes. Also, I do plan to make some pants for myself and also want to refresh myself on the fitting process.So I've got what I need for this trip and look forward to sharing any new discoveries. I'm going to fill like I'm in sewing school for the next couple of weeks. I love learning so that will be quite fun!!!!

On a fun note today I discovered a Super Wal-Mart in Anchorage. I forgot a few items and boy was it a lifesaver. Especially since I will be spending the next 2 weeks in very remote Barrow, AK and would probably have a hard time finding some things.

I never thought I'd ever be so happy to see one! And not to suprisingly, it looks just like all the rest I've seen. Kinda felt like home away from home.

For kicks and giggles I wanted to see if it had a fabric section. And it did! Sigh...the sight of fabric & sewing machines always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside:)

A New Year, a Glance back, and Continuing the Challenge!

Happy New Year to ya!!!! Wow, can't believe we're already 8 days in. I'm SUPER excited about the new year because I know it abounds with new opportunities. I feel pretty invigorated and motivated!

I probably shouldn't feel this way considering the fact that I have not sewn in a couple of weeks. That's right, I haven't sewn in quite some time. It just doesn't even seem right that those words can come out of my mouth. I haven't sewn a stitch in over 14 days. I'd probably be depressed by this if I weren't being EXTREMELY productive in other areas of my life. I actually spent the last couple of weeks organizing my life. I organized my house. I mean I overhauled it. I downsized tremendously. Got rid of clothes, shoes, furniture, and other items and turned them over to Goodwill. And then I went on a bit of a decorating spree. I LOVE my home---everything is SO pretty and I'm nearly finished decorating!!! Now I just have to do an overhaul on my sewing room and I will be good. It's amazing how relaxed you feel when your house is in order.

With my home in great shape, I'm ready now to get my sewing plans together for the year. But before I do, let me take a quick glance back at last year's progress. As you know I'm all about my 10,000 Hours Sewing challenge. I didn't re-cap the last few months but I recorded my hours and I'm still very much driven to reach my goals overall 10,000 hour goal--which will take several years to accomplish. My goal last year was to try and sew 1000 hours but I fell a bit short and only ended up with 881. Well that's ok. I hope to make that goal for this year. Despite not hitting my numbers I did manage to make the following:

14 Dresses

2 Tops

1 Pair of pants

1 Velour Jumpsuit

3 Strapless Jumpsuits

2 Dresses for my Daughter
1 Dress for my Goddaughter

1 Ball Gown

I have to admit that my 2 favorite pieces were the formal dresses:

And believe it or not, I'll have to make formal gowns again for the same events this year. I can feel myself salivating already!!! So it's time to look forward. There's SO many things I want to get done this year and I'm working on my plan right now. I really won't be able to begin sewing on my plan since I have to leave for a 2 week research trip for work at Barrow, Alaska on Friday (I can't believe it's my 4th one). But you better believe upon my return I'll have a solid plan and will be "ready to sew up a storm"! And not to worry, although I'll be away, I've still be blogging and I'll be doing much sewing related reading. I've got to keep racking up those sewing hours!

I'm looking forward to having a great year!!! I'm planning on sewing and achieving new goals which I can't wait to share. I hope you'll stay on for the ride. So once again, Happy New Year's--from my family to yours! Here's a parting shot of my family's New Year's photocard pic.

Crash, Burn,.........and Recover!

By the time I got my legs into those leggings I knew something was wrong. The only thing I could hear in my mind was those fateful words "Houston, we have a problem". And tried as I may, I pushed and pushed, and realized those leggings were just going to be too tight to even wear. How could I have made such a silly mistake?

My plan, as mentioned in my last post, was to whip up a quick pair of leggings (using McCall pattern 6173) to wear to a Christmas party at church on Tuesday. I wanted to pair it with a tunic, jacket & scarf. This should have been totally uneventful but a silly mistake of absent mindedly cutting the leggings out wrong (stretch going down instead of crosswise) messed the whole mission up. Totally my fault!

(Look at the width of that leg. This could've been easily mistaken for a sleeve! LOL!)

So I'm out a piece of really nice legging fabric. And all over a silly brain fart. Nevertheless, the evening was not lost and I still was able to put on another outfit for the party. I through on a funky tan jacket, blue screen T, Express dark denim jeans and brown boots.

Fast forward to today. I marched down to Jo-Ann's and was able to get more of the same legging fabric to replace the loss. Actually I bought 2 pieces! Yay me!!!! So I''m quite the happy camper. See, it's the Project Runway dark blue (denim look-alike) legging/jegging fabric. I don't own any skinny jeans but I suspect when I'm done making these my leggings will have the look of a skinny jean.

This whole situation got me thinking a bit. I'm actually happy it happened. For one, it showed me just how far I've come as a sewer. I remember the days I would be devastated over such a mistake and the loss of a prized piece of fabric. Trust me I was pretty hurt by this snafu and until today I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get my hands on more fabric. But I didn't internalize the issue and let it define me. I just brushed the issue off and decided to move on to the next thing. Maybe I'm not explaining it right, but I'm sure there are some of you out there who know exactly what I mean. It's nice to have the confidence to "recover" even after you've "crashed & burned". Also this scenario made me appreciate the checks & balances I have in place to avoid any major disasters, which for me are few and far in between. For one, I usually always make a muslin--especially for wovens & pants to ensure a good fit and save good fabric. Trust me mistakes happen, but I've heard the definition of craftsmanship is being able to cover one's mistakes (wink).

So I'm back at square one and need to make my leggings which I'll knock out in the next few days. It was nice to go through that little situation & learn more about myself. Not a big deal, but pretty cool. How about you..have you had a recent sewing snafu that you handled fairly well? Do share:)

Crazy love for Sweater Dresses!

I've mentioned before that I have a serious love for cute sweaters and plaid skirts during the fall and cold winter months. Another article of clothing that I simply can't live without are sweater dresses. I promise you I'd wear them several times a week if I had that many. They are a wardrobe staple for sure. You can dress them up or down. They wear well with tights, leggings, fancy boots, or flats. And I love to throw on a scarf with them to make them even more winter worthy.

Well a sweater dress is exactly what I wore to church today. It was a gray one in which I accessorized with a black belt, black striped tights, and suede boots with cute little buttons, and silver hoops. I was rather proud of my look--it was simple and yet cute--- and of course I LOVE the comfort and warmth that these dresses bring.

After church I had to run a few errands and ended up at my favorite store Ross Dress for Less. I believe that's where I purchased the sweater dress I was wearing and definitely the boots. I love to check out there shoes and clearance racks. I always get PHENOMENAL sales. You guy's know me, I'm all about being frugal. Anywho, I ran across a sweater dress that I wanted to have. It was by Calvin Klein and frankly every sweater dress I've seen of this brand I've wanted to have. They're just so gorgeous.

But the price wasn't where I wanted it. It wasn't worth $40 to me by far---$20 maybe, $15 is more like it:).

So I skipped out on it for now. I'll keep checking back, one is bound to go on clearance soon. But I did run across 2 others that I liked and bought (I'm holding them in the first picture)---which combined was around $20. So I'm pretty happy with my bargain! I'm curious, what's your cold weather clothing staple????

Sewing Jots & Tittles 12.17.11

Wow it's been a little while since I did one of these post! Here's just a few things I've been focusing on.....

-Almost finished.....
I'm currently working on Simplicity 2305 and just have to add the skirt and zipper. I'd hoped to have it ready for a party last week but with back to back parties I just didn't make it in time. The fabric, which I love is a charmeuse from Jo-Ann's called "ostritch feathers". It's such a cool fabric.

-Time for a Coat
I might re-think that notion if we keep having 70 F temperatures. But while running through JC Penny to do some Black Friday returns I saw this coat. I love a bright colored coat with black buttons.

I have to make at least 2 coats this Winter. Even if the weather isn't consistently cold:) Time to go rummaging through my coat patterns.

-You can always find things cheaper
I bought a fancy bra contraption for this dress. I wasn't happy that in a time crunch I ended up having to pay $30+ for it (including the bra). Well I ran across one of the devices I used at an outlet store and look at the price. It was $1.99. Searching when you have the time is usually always worth while.

-Nude Shoe
I've wanted a pair since this Summer. I ran across this Steve Madden pair at Burlington Outlet's. Although they're cute, I didn't want them as a platform and with a strap. I'll keep searching. Hope to find some soon.

-Edwardian shoe
I must admit that I love shoes and I particularly love unique one's but this shoe was a BIT over the top. Look at those ruffles! Over the top all right!!!

-Warm FLEECE NEEDED!
I'm heading back to Barrow, Alaska (it will be my 4th trip) in less than a month for a 2 week long research trip and am in need of some additional warm clothes. The temperature there could be anywhere between -20F to -60F. Either way it will be EXTREMELY cold, painfully so. I've got a great jacket, wind proof pants, polypropylene undergarments, etc. and just wanted to bring along some warm fleece hoodies to go with these other items. A particular fleece that's really warm is the Polartec brand which is used in North Face & other high end hoodie companies. Those hoodies are way too expensive so I'm thinking about ordering the Polartec fleece and sewing my hoodies myself. I found a fabric mill HERE and will call on Monday. We'll see... Aside from that, does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get some deeply discounted North Face or REI fleece? I'd like some of their hats & gloves too.

-Angry Birds Formal
A friend sent me this photo and I just loved it. I'm not a fan of the game but I think this dress is pure genius.

The caption on the photo read "The wife of an executive at Rovio, the company that makes popular mobile game “Angry Birds” showed up to an event at the Finnish Presidential Palace wearing a dress suspiciously resembling the same foul-mood fowl". What do you think?

-Denim Jegging outfit
I plan to hopefully knock out a pair of denim jeggings on tomorrow to wear to an informal holiday party at my church on Tuesday. I plan to use this pattern, McCall 6173....

But I want to build and use this picture as my inspiration....

I'm thinking denim leggings, tunic, cute scarf, jacket, & boots. We'll see what I put together for the party:)

Here are a few non-sewing tidbits.....

-Gluten free goodies
Being gluten free means I often have to pass up the holiday work treats that are ever abundant each year. This year a friend and co-worker was kind enough to make me an entire gluten free platter of treats in addition to the normal treats for everyone else. That was too kind!!! Thanks Laura!!!

-My Hubby's many acts
For our church's interactive Christmas story my husband was an actor and played a Wise Man, Herod's advisor, & an Angel. It was a major production and 10 day/ 40+ hours committment (resulting in over 14,000 visitors. It was an awesome production. I even got to do a little costume work and hope to contribute more the next go around.

-Funny pic
My hubby sent this to me the other day and I burst into spontaneous laughter. This has happened to me too many times....LOL!

-"Wee-One" posing
Now I know my daughter has witnessed me posing for my blog pictures but goodness I never looked like this. She poses for most of her pictures like this. Her posing is on a whole other level!!!

Seriously, I never taught her to pose like this. LOL!!!

Vogue 8379--- Another Wrap Dress!

I recently made this pattern HERE and decided to crank out another version for a Holiday party I attended on tonight. I love this version with this fabric. When I bought this fabric I just KNEW it would be used for a wrap dress. Since I reviewed it a few days ago, I'm only going to show the pictures. I braved the cold and dark to bring these to you.....ok, maybe it's not quite that dramatic....but what else are you gonna do in a crunch to get the job done:) Here goes.....

Senseless Fear......

I can't believe I spent the last year avoiding using my newly purchased blindstitch machine. That's right, you heard me right. A YEAR! I bought the thing this time last year and got it at a phenomenal year. It was used and was going on closeout. And to be honest with a custom sewing and alteration business it is a MUST. So with the price tag of $125 more than half off the original price and a few months of warranty I knew it was a steal. So I bought it. Got it in the mail. Looked at it. Stared it over some more. And it's sat on the corner of my sewing desk for a year.

Well you ask, "Why would you buy a piece of equipment and not use it right away"? Well I have a one word answer. FEAR. Ok, now I feel like a total idiot to come to such a conclusion but it's the truth. And I might as well be honest. Hey, if I can't be honest with you Guys than who can I be honest with? (Smile) Anywho, I decided on last night that I would take the time to get the machine working since I had a few hems to do for a client and was running short on time. I oiled it up on yesterday and followed the manual doing the necessary machine adjustments. Well on tonight I finally figured out how to thread it correctly and VOILA'....the thing is the easiest machine to use. I made the most perfect hems and a job that I used to do by hand since I didn't like my conventional machine blindstitch, and took about 7 minutes total to hem 3 pants. That would have been an hour and a half job by hand. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!!

So I must admit that I feel so SILLY that I didn't just step out there and put this baby into use months ago. But I used my excuse of not being the machine tinkering type to procrastinate. And I know what else you're thinking. You're thinking that's a pretty lame excuse giving that I own like 3 different types of sewing machines--- a conventional, coverstitch & serger. But to that I empasize I was FEARFUL and when does FEAR (the senseless kind) EVER MAKE ANY SENSE! LOL! (sorry you just have to laugh at yourself sometimes.) It was the thought of the possible challenges of facing a new type of machine. And it actually turned out to be no challenge at all.

Moments like these make me wonder how many times in life have I robbed myself of opportunities and experiences because of that 4 letter word. How many sewing projects have I talked myself out of or risks I wouldn't take. I've been thinking alot about fear lately and am currently reading the book on overcoming your fears. It's funny, my blindstitch machine has served as a great example of senseless fear. This year I'm making a greater effort to step into the unknown and not let my fears dictate where I go. I especially look forward to doing this with my sewing. The older I get I realize that life is too short. Why miss out on living. And you'll never KNOW the unknown until you actually venture out into it. Lastly, I leave a great quote that I ran across this week that's worth pondering.......

Vogue 8379---TNT Wrap Dress!

I've been sewing my pants off lately and I've been anxiously waiting to sew this dress for some time. When I first bought this fabric online I knew it would be perfect for a wrap dress. I'm so delighted I was finally able to get around to making this dress. There's not much to be said about this dress! Simply stated, I LOVE IT! I know it's a pretty popularly reviewed pattern of Sewing Pattern Review.com. If you haven't used this pattern I recommend you give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Vogue 8379

Pattern Description:
Wrap front dress has soft pleats, side tie, and sleeve variations.

Pattern Sizing:
I made the size 12.

(Closer view. Notice anything interesting about the pattern on the bodice? I managed to get the pattern, throughout the dress, in the same direction except on the left side bodice (my right). The pattern goes down & not across. I nearly ran out of fabric with this dress and had to make due. Luckily, I could get away with it with this dress:)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Absolutely!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Super EASY!!! I cut this out on Friday night and sewed it up on Saturday. It's an easy pattern to assemble.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved everything!!! This pattern isn't highly reviewed for no reason!!!!

Fabric Used:
Poly lycra knit with red, black, & white geometric shapes.

(I love the vivid and bold colors. The shapes are pretty cool too!)

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't make an alteration--except I sewed the bodice to the skirt with a 3/8" seam to give me a little more added length. I did add the collar (it's hard to see with the print anyway) and made the quarter length sleeve with the sleeve band. So my dress is a hybrid between views A & B.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Absolutely! I've made it once before but never reviewed it. It's definitely a TNT wrap dress pattern.

It's my Blogoversary & A Giveaway!!!

Actually, yesterday was my 2 Year Blogoversary but I dragged in so late and was too tired to post. I couldn't let the time pass without honoring an achievement I'm well proud of. I'm SUPER excited that I've been around that long and I'm THANKFUL that you've hung in there with me through my sewing experiences offering both great comments and advice.

As with any anniversary I tend to get extremely sentimental and reflective. I feel so blessed to have sewing as a hobby that I'm SO passionate about. Ok, I 'm absolutely obsessed with it but you know you are too (wink)! I'm delighted to use have the ability to work on projects that help to improve my skills and help me get one hour closer to reaching my TEN THOUSAND SEWING HOURS goal!!! And I love the notion of giving back and using my skills to make garments for other people or even inspire them. Sigh.......needless to say my heart is very happy and I'm so excited for what the next year will bring. I hope it's full of many more challenges and that I grow tremendously as I strive to hone my craft.

I love the projects I've been taking on but I definitely want to push myself more next year. I'd love to get to the point where I'm getting 2 projects done a week or 3 within a 2 week period. I'd love to stock my closet full of pants and jackets I've made myself. And I want to do much more sewing for my little girl. Those are just a few of the goals I'll be pursuing in the next year. So please expect bigger and better things as I try to raise the bar a little higher this year.

My Answer: I feel like this year I've really improved in my ability to fit myself. I like to wear alot of fitted dresses and tops so the skill of pattern tweeking is a necessity for me. I've recognized the common fitting issues I have with commercial patterns so it's easier now to go ahead and correct the issue on the pattern before I even do a tissue fit or muslin. I used to really stress about the fitting but I really feel at ease with it now and feel much more comfortable fitting dresses, skirts, and shirts. Where I'd like to improve my fitting is with pants. Although I've sewn a few pairs of pants before, I'm still working to tweak the fit perfectly on them. I hope by this time next year that fitting pants won't even make me break a sweat!!! I also want to make several jackets so I can make them flawlessly.

Simplicity 3503---The Birthday Girl's Dress!!!

Ok, this is the 4th and final post detailing the Salsa birthday party dresses I made. Actually this is the most important one----the BIRTHDAY GIRL's DRESS! I finally got my hands on some of the pictures from Saturday night's party so you could see the dress I made for my co-worker and dear friend, Tina, who was celebrating her 40th Birthday----Salsa style!!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this dress! As I mentioned in my earlier post this is Simplicity 3503. The style and fabric print/colors were perfect for the occasion. Making a dress for her big celebration was such an honor and I'm so delighted it turned out perfectly. I LOVE sewing for others---it allows me to contribute to their special moments in a special way. She was an awesome muse and we were able to put our ideas together to decide on a style that would flatter her figure and give her just the amount of sexiness she was going for. Plus she's an excellent Salsa dancer and with so much dancing to do a the party, the dress had to be as comfortable as it was cute. I think this turned out GREAT!!! What do you think?

Simplicity 2406---My Salsa Birthday Party Dress!!!

The Big Salsa themed 40th Birthday for my friend was on last night and I'm happy to say that it was a WONDERFUL party!!! The food, decorations and outfits were all quite lovely!!! And there was alot of Salsa dancing which made the environment so fun and festive. If you've been following along with me they you know I was in charge of making the Birthday girl a dress and one for myself (see last post). Well the Birthday girl's dress turned out quite lovely (everyone loved it---HOORAY) but I am waiting on all of the pictures so I can post them soon. The party was dimly lit so my poor cell phone didn't quite cut the picture taking since I didn't have a flash. Fortunately we had a photographer there:) Anywho, in the meantime I'll post pics of my dress and review it.

I have to admit that I love this dress and think this look came together quite well. I was looking for something sexy and fun and this sure did fit the bill!!!

Pattern Description:
I made view B----Dress with gathered neckline, back slit, sleeves with shoulder openings and sash.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut the size 10 in my muslin but ended up adding a smidge in the hip since it was a bit snug.

A thousand times YES!!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so! Nothing complicated about it.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked how nicely drafted the pattern was and how well it went together. The revealed sleeves and back were sexy touch.

FYI or TMI--LOL!: I had to purchase undergarments that would allow me to wear this dress without making them visible to the world. I ended up with this contraption. A new strapless bra to which I added clear straps and a low back extender which connected to the back of my bra pulled it down, wrapped it around the front and clipped in the front. I bought all of these items from I think a Bali, playtex outlet store.

It worked but I still ended pinning about 1" out of my slit. I was so scared I would dance and one of the straps would come loose and hit someone in the eye! What a contraption indeed! LOL!

Fabric Used:
A polyester woven fabric from Jo-Ann's. I was LOVE at first sight. I was insta
ntly drawn to the fabric colors and designs. I wanted the perfect fabric---one that would give the design the much needed crispness & volume.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I made a muslin which was a good idea for me. I'm extremely anal when it comes to fit. It turns out that I only made 2 adjustments.
1. I'm shortwaisted in the back so I shortened the length in the middle back of the dress by almost 2" and tapered to the sides.
2. Because my back is so short, I also shortened my back slit by 3". I just folded the 3" out of the back facing and everything went together perfectly.

(Last but not least.....my shoes!!!! Love these!!!)

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I'd like to sew it again. Maybe in a solid color or in a denim fabric. It's a really cool dress. I love it and recommend it highly to others.

Conclusion:
Super cute dress! It fit the bill for my party and I received lots of compliments!!!!

Salsa party dresses follow up Part II: One Down, One to go!

Please forgive me, since my initial Salsa party dress post things have been CRAZY!!!! So crazy I've been unable to visit you Guys in blog land like I've been wanting to. I've got to catch up with you and your projects!!!!

Nevertheless, things are moving right along and minus a few hiccups I'm making good timing with sewing the 2 dresses I describe in my initial post. As mentioned in that post, I have the extreme honor of sewing a Birthday party dress for a friend/co-worker who will be celebrating her 40th bday at a Salsa themed party. I'll also be making my dress for the party. Well on last week I made a muslin (sample dress) for my client and we had a fitting which only required minor tweaks. Here's the dress. Unfortunately I'm not into putting pics of my clients in muslin's on my blog. Seriously, I'm only allowed to embarrass myself like that! LOL! Remember this is the pattern....

Here's the muslin (sample dress for fitting)...

The dress bust is a little large since it's 2 cup sizes larger than that of my dressform. My friend is a size 36 DD in the bust so that required me adding about 2" to the bust length to ensure the midriff fell at the base of her bust. That was all it took and the dress fit perfectly. Since I lengthened the front bodice I did the same for the back. But after further inspection notice she was short waisted in the back and I'd have to go and pinch out some of that length in the bodice back and midriff piece. Other than those 2 things the muslin looked great and the dress was a cinch to put together. I did sew 2 versions for myself not so long ago:)

I proceeded to cut out the actual fabric, assemble the dress, and schedule another fitting with my friend. The fitting went well and in addition to the 2 alterations above I realized that the fabric was a bit more stretchier than the muslin fabric so I'd need to take out an 1" in the upper bodice side seams. The dress is currently on my cutting table being operated on.....I mean altered. Here it is here.....

And I hope to be done with it in the next day. (Exhales, wiping sweat off brow). I'm happy that things are working out great. But on to the drama--you know there is anytime you have an important project going on. It seems I didn't have any major issue with my friend's dress (knocking on wood) but I had a few issues with my own. Remember, I wanted to make this dress......

Well I did---in muslin first. And boy did it turn out be a cutie! Please trust me on that. It's hard to tell from the pic, especially since unbleached cotton never really makes any design look attractive. But here it is....

Remember the dress looked like this....

Although this dress wasn't super easy to make it was pretty straightforward.. It had alot of steps and required tons of pleating but the neat design made it well worth it. The only problem is that the way the dress is made, you couldn't possibly lift your arms in it. It's not made for those maneuvers. The bodice is described as close fitting and the way it is cinched in right under the bust along with the sleeve design made it difficult to lift my arms. I recall reading this in another reviewer's post. Well it's a Salsa themed party and I hope to be doing alot of twirling (or trying to learn how rather) and didn't want the dress to inhibit this. So I had to find another dress---and STAT!!!!

So I searched..... And searched.......Searched some more! Went through all of my patterns and kept searching. Then I stumbled upon a pattern I'd attempted to make earlier but with the wrong type of fabric. Well I abandoned the project. But after much thinking realized this style would make for an alluring party dress. It turned out to be Simplicity 2406 view B--the one being modeled.

Then I had to turn my attention to finding the perfect fabric. I nearly drove myself MAD---seriously!!! After MUCH searching and I mean MUCH--I finally stumbled on the RIGHT fabric for it. There were alot of suggested fabrics on the pattern envelope but I wanted a specific effect. I didn't want to make the dress out of charmeuse like I orinigally intended with Vogue 1207 (my original dress pick) since I wanted the dress to have less shine and more volume. I stumbled on a fabric at Jo-Ann's that had the right amount of weight and some great colors. I'm keeping it a secret for now. I'll reveal shortly.

Ok, that's it for now. I've got alterations and need to cut and sew my dress. Lots of work but I'm nearly half way there and am not worried too much. So enough about me, what's been going on with you? Have any HUGE projects lately taking up your time?

Sewing Jots & Tittles 11.6.11

"Sewing Jots & Tittles" is my weekly post where I get to ramble on and on about sewing related stuff that's been on my mind. Take a peek if you dare......LOL!

Velour jumpsuit
-Thanks guys for all of your nice compliments regarding my jumpsuit. I absolutely love it! I had to do my usual early Saturday morning grocery shopping and guess what I grabbed to wear. So warm & convenient! Can't wait to make the next one. I'm on the hunt for charcoal grey velour (thanks for the suggestion Texan). I've always wanted one in that color. And I still need one in black.

But what I really loved about this pattern that I forgot to mention was that I got the opportunity to use my Velva board and boy did it make pressing the velour SO easy!

In the past, before I found the velva board, I would use a towel and although it worked ok it wasn't the greatest. I didn't get any weird smashed seams and imprints. It's a shame they don't make and sell these anymore. I'm happy I was able to get my hands on it when I did.

Keeping Bright in the Cold!
-I still need some more cold weather wear, specifically for work. Since I work in a very casual environment I can't be dolled up for work but I still like to keep it cute and fun. This is something I wore to work the other day. I wore this red fleece vest and BRIGHT yellow knit shirt with khakis. Although I felt like a bottle of ketchup and mustard---LOL!!!--I loved the colors.

What can I say, I REALLY LOVE bright colors!!! It's my way of sticking my tongue out at the cold weather and hazy feel and look of fall and winter. It the suns not out constantly shining then I want my wardrobe to reflect that brightness.

I love the fleece vests and hope to make a few soon. I'd love to have them in very bright colors. This is the pattern I was eyeballin'.

New McCall Patterns
-I went to Hancock's for a return and stumbled on a pattern sale. They had the new McCall's. I grabbed up a bunch. These were my favorites....

Project Accessory
-There's a new spin off to the Project Runway franchise on Lifetime and it's called Project Accessory. I'm a little perplexed by that. It's a competition in similar Project Runway fashion but instead of clothes the contestants have to make accessories. I'm not to eager to check this one out, but it might be good. I barely was able to get the Project Runway season it (thanks God for online episodes). Speaking of which, the way that panned out was interesting. Who would've thought the least experienced sewer would be such a talented designer and win the competition. I guess experience isn't everything, huh?

-I was out today at Burlington Factory minding my own business and getting a refund when I mozied on over to the shoe section. Low and behold guess what I found. A pair of Nine West black dressy boots!!! I've ALWAYS wanted a pair but refused to pay in-store prices. Well there they were and for the great price of $59. I had a $23 gift card which knocked that price down even further. Well I swooped those up without any prejudice and I'm happy to say they are getting adjusted to their new home. I can't wait to wear them!!!

Salsa party fabric change
-As I mentioned a few posts ago, I'm helping to coordinate a birthday bash for a friend with a Salsa theme. I'm making her and my dress. I'm working on her muslin now (expect details later) but I switched up the fabric I was planning to use for my dress. It was nice but didn't have that "Wow" factor I was looking for. So I searched my fabric stashed and Hancock Fabrics and Jo-Ann's. I turned up this little number at Jo-Ann's.

It's perfect!!! Surprisingly the colors are the same. It's also a charmeuse. I just like the sharpness of the pattern. I think it will show the design details alot better than the abstract print I originally picked.

Crochet shorts?!?!
-My hubby ran across this the other day and I nearly fell out my seat from laughter! He found this pic on the web. They describe the shorts as knitted but it looks crocheted to me. That aside it's just wrong for any many to wear this! It sure makes for a great laugh!!!

Well that's what's been on my mind. What's on yours??????

Kwik Sew 3678-- a Velour Jumpsuit

I've had this jumpsuit on my to-do list since last year when I purchased this pattern. There was just something about it I just loved. Velour jumpsuits are so fun and stylish. Here's my version. It's not "Juicy Couture" (and you know it didn't cost that much. Only cost me about $15 including fabric and notions.) but it's mine which makes me even more proud of it. I'm looking forward to getting much wear out of it. I head back to Alaska for work in January so you know what I' will be wearing in the airport (smile). I also plan to make a black version (and maybe even a gray one) which will probably be more fitted. Anyhow, here's my review.....

Kwik Sew 3678

Pattern Description:
Jumpsuit jacket and pants. I made view A.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut the size medium.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Absolutely!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so!!! No disappointments here.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like how easy it was to assemble the jacket and pants. The pattern pieces fit together perfectly! I love how most of it was constructed on my serger. It really doesn't take more than a day to put both pieces together. There's only 11 steps for the jacket and 8 for the pants. Super easy!

Fabric Used:
A stretch polyester velour in navy.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
*I omitted the pants pocket
*I added clear elastic to stabilize the jacket shoulders
*I used stay tape to stabilize the zipper.
*I added 3" to the hem.
*I used my coverstitch machine to finish the jacket edge and the pants and sleeve hems.
*Future alteration: Next time I make it I'll be sure remove at least 1" to 1.5" from the crotch length and taper the pants legs from the hips to the hem. When I make this alteration I'll add more to the hem to compensate.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, yes, and yes! I have some stretch black velour that I plan to use with this pattern.

Conclusion:
This is a stylish and comfortable jumpsuit. A nice addition to any wardrobe:)

A Tale of 2 Salsa Party dresses: Part I

I'm feeling so restless right now! Mainly because it's been an extremely busy week. There was so much going on and now that it's Friday I finally get to decompress. Secondly, I have 2 dresses to make for an upcoming birthday party in 3 weeks. I'm conspiring with friends and co-workers to throw a 40th "Salsa Themed" Birthday party for a well loved friend and co-worker. My gift to her is to make her birthday dress and to style her from head to toe. She's a lovely girl and I consider it such a privilege. She wanted a dress that would be fun, flirty, and birthday worthy. Well I've been mulling over ideas for the last couple of weeks and after much consideration arrived at the following pattern and fabric choices.

This pattern fit the bill!!! She wanted a cute knit halter dress that would provide sex appeal and comfortable wear. She'd be able to dance the night away in this dress in style. I can testify to the comfort of this dress because I made it myself last year. I plan to make her version D which is the short red dress pictured above. This is the fabric I plan to use....

The party colors are red, black, and white and this print fabric is perfect. The fabric itself is a peachskin (it feels fabulous) with I think 20% stretch which I just purchased on sale at Fabric.com. I have exactly 2 yards of fabric, 1/4 yard more than the pattern requires. So I really don't have any extra. If anyone out there in "web land" has this fabric from Fabric.com and wouldn't mind selling me some please let me know!!! Even 1 yard would help GREATLY!!! Anyway, that's all I'm going to say about this dress right now. I'll keep you posted as I progress with this dress. Next week we're doing fittings. I love working with clients:)

Earlier I mentioned that I had 2 Salsa dresses to make. Well I introduced you to the Birthday Girl's dress. Well I've got one to make for myself. A party invite automatically means I get to make myself a fancy dress. I'm pretty excited about that. I finally made it through planning for the Birthday Girl so I could finally focus on myself. I wracked my brain for a minute and ran through a bunch of ideas. I ran across this pattern and it stuck. I decided to go with Vogue 1207.

I like this dress ALOT!!!! It's all about the print, sleeves, and plunging back neckline. I plan to modify the pattern a bit by raising the back neckline a smidge so I can wear a bra with it plus I'll nix the pockets. I usually go the route of a fitted dress but I'm excited to go a little short and sexy---yet still look decent enough to be called "the Wee-One's" Mama! LOL! I'm curious to see how I'll look in it.

I picked this fabric that I've been holding for another dress but thought it would work wonderfully.

The only thing is it photographs beautifully in natural light but looks blah indoors. But hopefully you can kinda see it's beauty. It's a charmeuse with hues of gold, various shades of brown, and gray. It's beautiful. I may look around for another fabric, but it would have to be phenomenal to beat out what I've already got.

So this the story on the two dresses in the pipeline. I'll keep you posted. I'm hoping the process to be fun and to have great results. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!

Simplicity 2246---- Denim Shirt Dress

I finally finished this dress I started over a week ago and am pleased with the results. It's the first shirt dress I ever sewed and it certainly won't be my last. I've always loved shirt dresses! I'm happy I used a denim fabric. I know I'll get good use out of this dress and will be able to dress it up or down as needed. The fabric was a bit of a gamble since it was a much heavier weight than recommended and had alot of stretch. It's the kind of fabric that has the potential to "grow" during the course of a day. So I was sure to cut this dress a bit smaller than normal to account for that. Anywho, I wore it all day and it was perfect. This morning was pretty cold so I threw on some black tights and wedges. By the time I took these pics it was in the 70's again. It's so hard to dress for our weather sometimes. Ok, I digress, my pattern review is below........

Simplicity 2246

Pattern Description:
Shirt dress in 3 different lengths. I made view A.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a size 8 for the bodice and graded up to a 12 for the waist and skirt.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Absolutely!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved most everything about this pattern. The only thing I did differently is slipstitch the button placket and collar.

Fabric Used:
Mystery black denim with some stretch.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The only thing I did was lengthen it by 3 inches.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I would! I'd like to make it in a lighter cotton fabric for the Spring.

Conclusion:
Cute shirt dress! Definitely a wardrobe staple:)

"Sewing Jots & Tittles" is my weekly post where I get to ramble on and on about sewing related stuff that's been on my mind. Here what's been bouncing off the wall of my mind.....

-Shut In & Sew.....
After a Really BUSY week and a busy one planned for next week too, all I want to do is stay in and sew this weekend. I'm looking forward to finishing up Simplicity 2246. Unfortunately I didn't get to finish it for last weekend (since I decided to take my time and slipstitch the front button plackets---I just wanted it to be super NEAT) but I just have to add the sleeves, collar and buttons and I'll be done. It's coming along quite nicely. Here's pic with sleeves pinned into place. It doesn't look like much now but with buttons and a belt I'm hoping it will be real cute:) I hope to wear this on Sunday!

I'm looking forward to starting a couple more projects this weekend. I REALLY need to get a move on the sewing. The weather's turning cooler and I need warmer clothes to wear.

-It's just that serious......

I bought some of the new Buterick patterns and nearly flipped out when they didn't have this pattern. I mean it would be one of many coat patterns I have but for some reason I just LOVE this pattern. I love the short version which in my opinion would be so sassy. Well I couldn't wait for it to go on sale again and chance missing it for a second time. So I went and bought it 40% off of the full price. So much for the $0.99 sale. But I just HAD TO HAVE IT! I hate when some patterns make me that crazy. Oh well, at least I can rest easy now.

-Fabric on the Way
I mean I really haven't been buying any fabric lately. That's good since I need to really sew down my stock and would rather do that. But I do love to catch a good fabric sale every blue moon. Such was the case with my recent Fabric.com purchase. I was able to get some really cute clearance fabric and score free shipping, a 15% discount and apply a $10 credit. I came out of that deal with 4 different fabrics (7lbs.) and some bias tape for around $37. I can't wait to get my fabric.

-On the Blouson kick
Most of you know that the main reason I made this dress was because I wanted a casual dress that would work great for the winter months when paired with boots, scarf, and a jacket. Although I love this dress and my changes to the pattern, I wanted a dress that was a true blouson. Well I stumbled upon this pattern and love it.

The reason I wanted this pattern was because it resembled this dress I saw in the Lucky magazine. I love the styling suggestions for this type of dress.

I have wanted it forever!!!! I did manage to buy some hunter green knit in my recent Fabric.com purchase. I hope it will work for this dress. Wouldn't it be cute paired with a cute vest or a scarf???

-Boots to Buy
I'm in desperate need of dressy black boots and some casual brown boots with a chunky heel. DSW sent me a coupon for $20 off a $49 purchase. Hmmmmmmm......I don't have a local store (the nearest one is 2 hours away) but I may have to check them out online! I'm not a big fan of online shoe shopping but for those savings I may make an exception. I just checked out there clearance section HERE and found some cute booties, wedges, & boots.

-So behind
I'm about 4 episodes behind on watching Project Runway on Lifetime and I haven't been able to catch the Rachel Zoe, Fashion Hunters, & Mad Fashion on Bravo. Sigh.... Fortunately Lifetime allows you to watch episodes online. So at least I'll be able to catch up on Project Runway.

Fall Fashion Forecast/ Accessory Hop

Please bear with me, I meant to have this post done hours sooner but I'm home from work nursing a sick child. Fortunately we caught the ear infection/ sore throat early so with meds & some R& R the "Wee-One" will be back to her old self....... faster than you can even say "Karl Lagerfeld wears black leather gloves"! LOL! Just being a little silly!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm really estatic about my Fall sewing ideas. The plans just keep coming together and I look forward to executing them. Here's a few ideas of what I see my fall wardrobe shaping up to be. Also, I'm participating in Toy's "Accessory Hop" so I'll also include the accessories that I plan to incorporate in my wardrobe.

My Fall Wardrobe will include...

-My favorite staple, turtleneck or sweater and cute plaid skirts .

(excuse the wrinkled skirt, no time to iron)

Accessories: Shoe booties, bracelet, necklace, and/or tights.

-Printed dresses with cardigans. I always love the combo because it allows you to be bold but tame it a bit with a solid colored cardigan. It's always quite the look.

(Sorry, couldn't track down the black cardigan. But you can use your imagination:)

- Sweater dresses. I LOVE these. They're warm and stylish!!!

Accessories: Tights and Scarfs.There's a pack of gray & black tights hanging from the pocket. I hope to add some colored tights in the mix as well as featured in this picture.

-Jackets. I love jackets, they're always an extra layer that can add a wow factor to any outfit. Especially when it's over a graphic tee and sequined scarf.

Accessories: Cute scarves, earrings, necklaces, & bracelets

- Velour Jumpsuits. As you know I work a job with a very casual dress code so I need some stylish, yet cute looks to add to my wardrobe.

I have black & blue velour that I can't wait to use with this Kwik sew 3678 pattern!

-Cardigan & Jeans or Corduroy pants:

I've only sewn one cardigan but plan on making a few more in basic colors so I can always have one to grab. I also have black & tan corduroy fabric for the pants. Here's the patterns I plan to use.......

Accessories: Boots, necklaces, bracelets, earrings

-Tunics/ Pullovers & Leggings. I really hope to live in this style but I've got alot of sewing to do. Here's the patterns I plan to use to achieve the look.

Accessories: Chunky boots, headbands, bracelets, belts

So those are some of the outfits I'm trying to rock for fall. I have most of my dressy clothes but need to focus on sewing more of the casual one's.

..well at least at the moment is this cute little Simplicity pattern I picked up a few days ago from Jo-Ann's. I'm really LOVING this dress. Like really LOVING it!!!! I pulled out a dark mid-weight denim from my stash and hope to have this done by the weekend. I've always wanted a cute denim dress and hope this fits the bill. We will see. Pray for me----I've got a jam packed weekend of things to do but want to make this dress happen. In the meantime I'll just keep obsessing!!!! What about you....what's your obsession at the moment?

Simplicity 2850---The Little Blue Dress

It's funny that I still haven't got around to making a LBD (Little Black dress) but I couldn't resist the urge to whip up this number on Saturday. I wanted a dress that I could wear now and would carry into the fall when paired with tights, boots, and a scarf. I think this dress is perfect.So here's my review......

Simplicity 2850

Pattern Description:
Knit Mini Dress. I made view A and added the belt.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut the size 12 for the bodice and graded to a size 18 beginning at the underarm curve and ending at the dress hem.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Not really since it was alot looser due to the pattern changes I made.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Oh, yeah! Absolutely!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the neckline sleeves.

Fabric Used:
A deep blue navy poly-lycra knit with a crepe like texture. I loved the drape of this fabric and it's SO comfortable to wear.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
1. As described above I cut a size 12 for the bodice and flared the dress to a size 18. I've been really obsessed with blouson dresses so I wanted a dress that had a little more fullness.
2. Shortened the sleeve and used 3/8" elastic in the sleeves.
3. Added 5" to the length

I think so! It's such a quickie project (I made it on Saturday to wear Sunda) and I love the results. I recommend it 100%.

Cute dress! Just what I was looking for!

Sewing Jots & Tittles 10.6.11

-A Thousand Thanks
You guys have SUCH a wealth of information!!!! I appreciated all of your input regarding getting "the Wee-One" her own sewing machine. I appreciated all of your personal experiences and stories that you shared. I'm still processing all of the information but I think at the moment I will start her out with yarn, plastic canvas, and a plastic wide eye needle. I have a bunch of yarn (leftover from old crochet projects) and some plastic canvas in a variety of shapes. I think this will be extremely entertaining to her. When I decide to go the machine route I definitely will go with a real one instead of a toy. You guys opened my eyes. I didn't know there were so many nice machines for $40-$60.

-How Bazaar!!!
I received this month's Harper Bazaar and the cover of Lady Gaga au naturel caught my attention. I mean it's not often you see her without all of the wild makeup. So quite naturally I wanted to see her article so I flipped through a couple of pages to see if I could find the Table of Contents. Well 76 pages in guess what I stumbled on FINALLY! Seriously?!? Come on! Nothing like being forced to flip through 75 pages of advertisement just to find a table of contents! I got nothing but frustration from that exercise!

-Two wrong shoes sizes makes a RIGHT price!
I so happened to walk by Shoe Carnival on my way to a restaurant last weekend and saw they were having a sidewalk sale. Well some cute snake skin embossed in black caught my eye. What can I say it was love at first sight and they were 50% off with a sale price of $12. So I went to pay for them and the sales lady noticed that the shoes I had were in 2 different sizes--- a 9.5 & 10. Well it so happens that I can wear both. The sales lady tried to find the correct matches for these shoe but couldn't. So I asked if they'd sale them for a discount. They slashed them down to $7 and I left the store with 2 differently sized shoes and a happy wallet. Don't you judge me---you know I'm down for a good bargain (wink)!

-Rekindled Love
I made this snakeskin print knit dress a few months ago and had mixed feelings about. But I tried it back on again and fell back in love with it. Maybe it was the change in styling or the fact that I've been hitting the gym and the dress just fit much better. But I LOVE this dress. Funny how things can come full circle. Also, I'm wearing the size 9.5 & 10 black sandals that are pictured above. The texture of the shoes went perfect with the dress and surprisingly well with tights.

-Blog "Sew Here We go Again"
Karin from the blog "Making the Seam" was hit with a malware virus and as a result closed her blog so she wouldn't infect anyone else. It's pretty tough to start over. Her new blog is Sew Here We go Again. I went through the malware scare on last week myself so I can understand her frustration. Please visit her new location:)

-Accessory Hop!

-Lady Bug vs The Princess

My family and I don't personally celebrate Halloween but we like the idea of attending Fall Festivals at our church or others where we can dress up "the Wee-One". We planned to attend our first one this year but our church isn't having it this year. I'd looked forward to making "the Wee-One a costume". Right when I was about to nix the idea I noticed a flyer while leaving the YMCA. It turns out a local church and the Y are teaming up to have a Trunk or Treat festival on October 28th. That's perfect!!!! Now we can dress "the Wee-One" up for that. There's just only one challenge now. Originally "the Wee-One" wanted to be a princess--that was all she talked about. I picked out the perfect pattern and was preparing to purchase fabric when she spotted a Lady Bug costume lying around the house that was given to us by my husband's co-worker. Now it seems she may want to be a Lady Bug. What???? Would you pass up a custom sewn costume for some cheap store brand? LOL!!! The event at the Y is only 2 hours long, maybe it's not worth the effort of making a costume. We'll let "the Wee-One" have the final decision:)

Kiddie Sewing Machine Needed!

I need your help!!! A couple of weeks ago my 4 year old (aka "The Wee-One") asked if she could have her own sewing machine so she could sew with me. I almost fell out of my seat. Well at least I would have if I weren't driving at the time. Now I'm on a mission to get her a sewing machine so she can try her hand at what I consider to be "the Greatest Craft on the Planet". I blogged about my desire for her to pick up the craft in this post. I'll try to refrain from getting emotional and fantasizing about the two of us sewing together---side by side. Ok, back to the request. I'm particularly excited about this because it was a request she made all on her own. I didn't coax her or anything. She loves to hang out in my sewing room ( a little too much at times) going through my books, touching my fabric, and playing with my notions. So I think it only fitting for her to have her own little machine so we can see where this goes. So my question for you is can you recommend a good sewing machine for kids? Everyone I've seen at Amazon.com have had so-so reviews. Here's the Hello Kitty one here. It may be worth the shot but it's sorta hard to tell from the reviews. Anyone have any experience with this machine?

I found one here but I don't know if I want to shell out $60 and my daughter completely lose interest. If she were older that would be one thing but again she's only 4. You know they tend to like things one day and not so much the next. Plus this machine may be a little too mature for my daughter. Again I don't know, that's why I'm asking you. Know of any good sewing machines for kids? Also, do you have any kid(s) who sew with you? What's that experience like? I look forward to hearing your answers!!! Thanks in advance!

The Optical Illusion Dress?

Update: 9/30/2011--- I as well as other bloggers noticed a virus warning message when trying to view my blog. I deleted the pic to this post (please see links to view pic of Kate Winslet in dress) as well as my chat box (CBOX) since they were the latest items added to the blog. Hopefully that will take care of the virus messages! Much apologies!!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!

I ran across this dress in an article here and here while browsing the web today. Seems like this Stella McCartney's dress is creating quite the stir. I have to admit that Kate Winslet looks absolutely stunning!!! And the cut on this dress is INGENIOUS. I mean it literally does make Kate look curvier. According to reviews, it's supposed to make anyone look 2 dress sizes smaller. Plus it's made out of a sturdy cotton fabric that makes it like a "stylish scuba suit and packs the meat in". But truth be told, I like Kate just as much without the "exxagerated hour glass figure" that the dress give her. She's gotten flack about her voluptous figure in the past. But I think she's always looked phenomenal whether she was a size2 or size 12 (I don't really know her size, nor do I really care.)

The dress is gorgeous and all but in my opinion I don't think it should be the newest fashion craze because it creates an hour glass shape. I just think our society is TOO caught up in body size and shape. I know most women, myself included, like to dress in a way that accentuates their figure. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But do you think it's going too far when we go the extra mile in creating these optical illusions? Realistically we all use "tricks of the trade" to emphasize/ de-emphasize parts of our body. Just sometimes things seem to go too far. Maybe I'm just being a "Debbie Downer". As a seamstress who have made clothes for a few clients, I ALWAYS preach the importance of appreciating one's body. I think I'm cranky about this because I get tired of how society fights against that message.

I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions about this dress. Do you think this is just an innocent attempt to shape one's figure or is it much more. How do you feel society affects our views of ourselves. Are you able to fight against it? Please chime in......

Sewing Jots & Tittles 9.15.11 & 9.24.11

I've had so many sewing related thoughts these past 2 weeks that I thought my brain was going to short circuit. Here's what's been on my mind......

Obi What?????

-I was contemplating making an Obi belt for the dress I just finished. I wanted to make a white faux leather one but didn't have time to track down the fabric. Speaking of Obi belts. I googled to find a free online obi pattern and ran across a couple of designer obi belts. The prices were INSANE! Nordstrom had some for $60 and up. Diane Von Furstenberg's sales for $245. All for a belt!?! The day I can attach my name to such an item and charge that much money will be a SPECIAL day!

-Craving Home decor sewing
So where should I start? There's a list. I need to re-upholstery a chair in my living room. Make curtains for two bathrooms. Make a kitchen valence & place mats. The list isn't too bad. The challenge is to stop sewing for myself long enough to sew for the house. I'm getting antsy so I've got to get some home projects done ASAP!

(I plan to re-cover this chair seat and back in this red fabric)

(I also want to make kitchen curtains out of this striped home decor fabric that I've had for at least 2 years!!!)

-Just for fun
I've tried to let the idea go but I can't seem to. Do you think I really need a 4th jumpsuit? Well not really but somehow I can't let the notion of a jumpsuit with a cuffed capri pants go. I can't help it. I have a picture of one in my Style Look Book (can't seem to fine it at the moment but it's really cute!!!).

This jumpsuit is SO cute and is so fun and flirty---and it has a cropped leg! It's made from a light polyester fabric! Do you think it's a sign? LOL!!! The only way to get rid of the idea is to make it right? Maybe the urge will pass. Hmmmm, we'll see.

-UFO's everywhere
I have sewing UFO's and I need to commit some time to finishing up these objects. One such project I'm trying to wrap up now is ......

-Need to Downsize:
I'm in the process of cleaning out my closet. I just want to unload and get rid of everything but the necessities. Basically I want to make at least HALF of the clothes in my closet disappear!!! And I'm not kidding. I love unloading from time to time. Simplicity is the name of the game. Besides, barely worn clothes take up too much space. It's more useful to give these items to Goodwill where they'll hopefully get better use. That will be my project this evening and I'm looking forward to it! Wish me luch:)

-Online fabric
I FINALLY ordered fabric online. Lord know's it's been forever. I had cardigans on the brain so I picked up these sweater knits at the last Fabric.com sale in navy, black, & brown. And I grabbed this cute print as a bonus.

-September Vogue
I was SO happy to get my hands on this magazine. I was shocked when I didn't see more people posting about it. Here's some photos I've been ripping out of the magazine. There's so much inspiring stuff in it!

-Netflix Fashion DVD

I was looking through movies on DVD and ran across the movie Bill Cunnigham New York. Now by the title you wouldn't guess this is the documentary about an 80 year old man who travels by bicycle taking pictures and documenting the fashion in NYC. He publishes his photos in the Sunday New York Times. This looks pretty interesting and has received alot of awards. I'll definitely be checking it out!

I'm always mesmerized by the Ann Taylor window displays. I could wear ANYTHING from that store!!! See what I mean....

I really like the store Body Shop but to be quite honest it's ALOT to take in at times. The store is packed with trendy styles that overloads my brain a bit. My style is ALOT simpler and doesn't revolve around tons of trendy sequined tops and short skirts. To be this trendy all of the time, not that I'd want to, I'd have to spend WAY too much money. It's cool for those who like this but just not my style. Nonetheless I like to do a quick browse through the store and check out their jewelry. And of course the window displays are always enticing!

McCall's 6112--- The Geometric print dress

This is a quick little dress I whipped up on last week. I had off on wearing it since I didn't have a belt for it and in my opinion it really needed one. It's a fun little dress and I'm happy with the results. Love the fabric and am happy I could showcase it in this way. Here's the review.

McCall's 6112

Pattern Description:
Dress has short kimono sleeves with slit and straight skirt.

Pattern Sizing:
I bought the group sizes of 14 and up so I had to scale it down to a 12 at the bodice and kept it a 14 at the hips and below.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes!!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
It was an easy pattern I could use to show off a great knit print. I loved the sleeves too!

A rayon poly knit in a cool geometric print.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
1. I nixed the pockets so I made view C for the bodice and used view B for the skirt.
2. I coverstitched the hem, lower edge of sleeves, & the neck edge.
3. I made the waist casing as I always do. I sewed the 1 1/4 seam allowance and serged the edge leaving an opening to insert the elastic. My casing was kept free from the dress and wasn't sewn down.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think so! It's a great, trendy dress!

Conclusion:
Cute little dress! Great if you need a quickie project!

Burda Loot!!!

Well I made it to Jo-Ann's after work on tomorrow and was all too excited to make a bee-line to the Burda pattern cabinet. None of the pattern sale signs were up and no one was at the pattern table. So frankly, if you didn't check the sales flyer you wouldn't have known about the sale. That worked in my favor!!! I came armed my list of patterns of interest that I looked up earlier at the French Burda website (thanks for the info Isidore)!!! And since no one was around I just camped out at the pattern cabinets and took my sweet time (way too much time) whittling down my list of patterns. I was SHOCKED to find that for most pattern numbers there was only one pattern available. So I ended up taking the last (and maybe the only) pattern for the 8 patterns I purchased. I'm happy I got everything I wanted but I feel sorry for the poor souls that come behind me looking for the same pattern. When they have Burda sales, Jo-Ann's should really consider stocking up those patterns!

Well here are the patterns I ended up with......

Love these dresses! They're so versatile and I think I could get multiple uses out of them. I particularly love the dress depicted in the first pattern. Here it is up close.

The dress is very simple and borderline too loose for my style but with the right fabric and the cute frills at the hem, I think it would be a winner. Plus, I have a few unusual prints that would be perfect for this type of pattern.

Also, this dress was cute too and I would LOVE to make it in a sparkling fabric for a special occasion. I also like the multiple looks for this dress. This would make for a cute & versatile little black dress.
I also liked these patterns too. Some cute tops that I could get some good use out of. I particularly like 7742 since I have a few ribbed knits that I could use to make my own turtlenecks. Those are definitely a staple for cold weather.

And of course a couple of outwear patterns. There's nothing like having stylish coats to go over other stylishly sewn outfits. I love view C on the first pattern (left). View A is a little too costumey for me. And I love both styles on the right pattern.

Anywho, that's all I picked up from the Burda sale. I'm happy to say that I don't do impulse buys when it comes to patterns--- (well maybe every once in a while)---but definitely not like I used to. So I hope to be It was nice picking out these patterns and I definitely see these made up in my wardrobe in the future. Hopefully that will be sooner than later:) How about you, were you able to make it to the Burda pattern sale? Did you get some real goodies:)

Extra! Extra! ---Burda Patterns on SALE!

Hey Gals,

Was perusing the Jo-Ann's sales fler and discovered that Jo-Ann's is having a pattern sale. I noticed that in addition to $1.99 Simplicity patterns there will also be $2.49 Burda patterns. I almost fell out of my chair. I missed the last Burda pattern sale at Hancock's a few months back and am happy a second chance has come along.

I like Burda patterns since they're a European pattern company and drafted differently than the American Big 4 (Simplicity, McCall's, etc.). I appreciate the streamlined fit more. I rarely buy Burda's because I don't like paying full price for them. Well with a sale like this I can rack up on some.

Excuse me, got to wrap up my work so I can head there right after work. The sale is from Sept. 8-10. Does anyone know how to access the Burda pattern catalog online? I usually like to do my shopping online before I get to the store so I don't have to wait for a catalog. I found Burdastyle.com but I could only see the patterns that correspond to the magazine, not the in store catalog. Maybe I'm overlooking something.

My weekly thoughts on sewing, sewing, and more sewing!!! Here's what's been on my mind.....

-No-Way to Burda 7682

I really wanted to make this dress and was strongly leaning toward it until I opened the pattern sheet and saw the size of the pattern. The skirt pieces are HUGE and 2 of each are required for both the front and back skirt. YIKES!!!

It should've dawned on me when I noticed this pattern called for more about 6 yards of fabric. Besides, sometimes full skirts can be a bit tricky. I LOVE my fabric but don't know if I really need 5 yards of fabric for the skirts. Truth be told, I want this same style dress but with a narrower skirt. So I'm going to have to pass on this one! Think I'll make the short version though---one day......

- Jegging fabric out of the wazoo

Ok, months ago I enquired on my blog about where I could find knit materials used to make jeggings. A reader so kindly responded that they found jegging material in the clearance rack at Jo-Ann's. Well a few months later, I was able to find the exact same thing and was SO excited. So excited that I stupidly bought like 5+ yards of it. Heck, I only need about 1-1 1/2 for jeggings! Well I got excited (and I got a good price on it) and convinced myself that I can make many other garments from it. But now I'm stuck. I guess I could make a fitted top, halter dress, etc. Any suggestions? Well I'm going to have to do something. I already know I'm going to make a short and long pair of leggings.

-Missing in Action

I HATE ( and although it's a strong word, I do mean HATE) when I cannot find a pattern that I want to use. And I have the PERFECT paisley cotton fabric for it. Bummer!!! I cut out this pattern a while ago and can't find it. It's in my sewing room and I'm certain I'm just overlooking it. I REALLY want this top! Sigh! May need to go and pick it up at the store. Fortunately Buttericks are regularly priced at $5.99. Although it's not the usual $0.99 it beats the envelope price. I've got to get my little grubby hands on this STAT!!!!

-On the Fence

I can't believe I'm actually admitting this, but I'm on the fence with Vogue 1250. I know everyone and their mama's made this pattern and sworn by it--and they should because I've seen alot of gorgeous versions of this dress. But I still have my reservations. I think it's the pattern envelope picture that throws me off. I can't stand how the cowl draped neckline creates ripples down through the waist of the garment . I just don't like the wrinkling effect. But after looking at the Pattern Review pics again I can see that the dress seems to fit you all better than the model on the pattern envelope. Maybe I should give this after all.....

-Excited about Fall Sewing.....

I'm all about Spring and Summer but I find myself getting a bit excited about Fall Sewing. The fact that I've picked up some new patterns and still have some patterns from last year that I want to make as well.
I love these two new patterns.

I've already picked my fabric for the cute dress on the left. I just need to get some cute shoe booties to go along with it. And I love over-sized shirts and jeggings. What effortless style!!!

-Active Wear Needed

I've started up working out at the YMCA after a 5 year hiatus of faithfully working out at home. I used to be such a "gym rat" and I'm excited that I've returned to my roots. The health benefits go without saying and I have SO much energy to do more things. So I'm encouraging you to also invest in your health and make sure you get enough physical exercise. Ok, I'm done with the PSA! LOL! Anyhow, I went shopping for some more work out clothes especially since it actually matters what you look like when working out versus doing so in the privacy of your own home. I was astonished at how expensive active wear is. I went to the Reebok outlet and ended up buying one $6 shirt on clearance. Everything else was a bit pricey--but keep in mind anything over $15 is pricey to me. I really wanted a cute pair of workout capri's but didn't $30 for them.

I may have to look into sewing up some for myself. I'll get to work on hunting down active wear patterns.

-JoAnn's Dress displays

Have you seen the dress displays at Jo-Ann's that are used to promote various patterns. Someone pre-sews these garments (wouldn't you like for that to be your job? LOL) and they're put on display. Well I ran into 2 that I just loved!!!! Note the dresses and accompanying stat cards.

Vogue 8631---Pretty Paisley Dress

OK, as you can see from my last post, I changed my mind again!!! I wanted to make something with a little more drama. After doing a little pattern & fabric digging I came up with this look. I've had this fabric in my stash for a few months and was looking for the perfect pattern. I'm happy with the results. I can't tell you how excited I was to be sewing again. I had another crazy sewing dream the night before I made this dress. It's too crazy and slightly embarrassing to share but fortunately it doesn't involve any of my fellow seamstresses (wink)!

Vogue 8631

Pattern Description:
Wrap dresses A, B have extended shoulders, front pleats, back darts, side seam pockets, inside ties, sleeve variations, hook and eye closure and bias tape finish. A: short sleeves in one with bodice. B: three-quarter
length sleeves. Length is 2" below mid-knee at center back.

Pattern Sizing:
I read from the other reviewers that this dress ran pretty big. So I went down a size and made a muslin using cotton muslin.

After looking over the muslin and taking into consideration that I would be using a moderate stretch knit (crosswise stretch only), I went down another size. I ended up making a size 8 for the bust and 10 for the skirt. Just to give you some perspective, I'm a size 8 RTW and normally make a size 12 (top) and 14 (bottom). So this pattern did run a bit big!!!!

I loved the simplicity of the pattern--being only 5 pieces. There wasn't anything really to dislike! The neckline was a little lower than expected so I wore a cami with it. I actually like it better with the cami!

A polyester, moderate stretch knit in a great paisley print in yellow, blue, red, tan, etc.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
*I lengthened it by 1.5".
*My back length is shorter than my front so I ended up taking 1" out the base of the bodice, tapering to nothing at the side seams.
*I nixed the pockets.
*I did a baby hem.
*Stabilized the shoulder seams with clear elastic.
*I cut the back and bodice piece on the fold.

(And I got to wear my new Nine West sandals---Yayyyyy!!!)

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Absolutely!!!! It's a SUPER easy dress to sew. I made it in a few hours. The bottom of the skirt is pretty and reminds me of a tulip. It's really flattering on all types of figures.

Conclusion:
Beautiful dress! A+++++ Results! It's definitely a Winner.

It's really nice to be back after 2 weeks away from work in a VERY cold place!!!! Trust me I welcomed the heat and humidity of Savannah, Ga. It took me about 16 hours of flying and I made it back from Alaska on last Tuesday. Just in time to celebrate my Anniversary with my Hubby (14 years, 9 of em' married) on the 24th and the "Wee-One's" 4th Birthday on the 26th. These are 2 VERY important people in my life and I wouldn't be able to do half of the stuff I do without their support. They are the joy of my heart!!!!

Well at the end of my 2 week sewing hiatus, I went through such bad sewing withdrawal that I started dreaming about sewing. Well it was only one dream but it was pretty humorous. I dreamed that I went to Rachel's (from the wonderful blog Smoking Needles) house. We met up, hung out for a while, and somehow she ended up agreeing to make me a dress. I don't remember all of the details of the dream, but I remember sitting down to watch tv and 45 minutes later Rachel emerged with a well sewn, satin, pink princess seam dress. All I remember thinking in my sleep was man, that woman's fast!!! LOL! I think we'd all admit 45 minutes would pretty fast to sew up most anything aside from a tank top. I just found it pretty funny to be dreaming about sewing. Well if you weren't convince I was obsessed with the craft before well there you go! LOL!

Needless to say I'm happy to be back and I'm itching to sew. I'd planned to sew up a bday outfit for the Wee-One but we had such an informal birthday party for her that there was no need. So now I've got to figure out what I want to make myself. After a couple of days of indecision I finally had a eureeka moment.

While at they gym the other day (my first time back after a number of years of absence--sinceI had a little quality time on the treadmill and eliptical machine and was able to ready the lastest issue of People Style Watch.

I ran across this dress and instantly fell in love with it!!!

I saw a few more pics of some dresses I liked....

and so I felt inspired to make me a cute denim dress. Actually it was a shirt dress that I saw in another magazine (not pictured) that inspired the denim dress idea. I don't own one and have always wanted to make one. So I went looking for the perfect pattern among my stash. Plus, I bought these cute Nine West camel sandals
before I left for my trip (I HEART these sandals)....

and they'd go perfect with a denim dress. But alas the week has gone by SO QUICKLY and it's already Thursday. And I still hadn't decided on a denim dress pattern so I think I will have to settle for a plan B dress......

The Simplicity 2187 dress---(I STILL so want to sew the jumpsuit). Possibly in one of these knit prints with a white tank top? Which do you like best for the dress???

Hey it's not the most ambitious project but I need something quick so I can get to sewing again. It's been WAY too long!!!!

Fabric Shopping at the "Top of the World!!!"---Picture Heavy!!!

I've been missing in action a bit because I'm in Barrow, Alaska again for work. You know I MISS sewing so much!!! I also miss seeing all of your blogs and definitely plan to catch up with all the wonderful things many of you are sewing. In brief, just because people usually ask, here's a brief description of what I'm doing up here. My lab has funding to work with other scientists to study climate change in Barrow, Alaska lookingspecifically at bacterial response (using molecular microbiology techniques) and nutrients in the ocean. Our project began last year and you may recall the last time's I've gone were in April and August of last year. April was breathtakingly beautiful with the sea ice and ice ridges. Not so much for August, especially since there's no snow and just lots of dirt and mud. But the Chucki Sea is an absolute. And hey, where else can you go and pay more than $11 for a gallon of milk....

and have 24 hours of daylight in the Summer.....this is what it looks like at 10 O'clock at night!!!!

(This is my 3rd trip here and I FINALLY saw a polar bear. Yup, and there are no fences or glass. He was about a good distance away and I just had my camera on max zoom. Fortunately, there was a local bear guid right next to us with a rifle to scare off the bear if he got aggressive. Fortunately he just looked around a couple of times but laid very quietly. I think he had an exhausting swim.)

Anywho, I've been up here since Wednesday, Aug 10th and as you can imagine had so much to do to get my household and personal self prepared for my 13 day excursion. At home I was in the middle of a couple of projects and unfortunately didn't get to finish the binding on my cute tank dress. That will be one of the first things I tackle when I get back.

Before I left I also ordered Peggy Sager's new DVD which I blogged about HERE. Unfortunately it didn't come in time for me to take on my trip. Grrrrrrr! So instead I grabbed a couple of sewing items (you know to make sure I accumulate my 10,000hr challenge "sewing or sewing related hours).....

.....thinking I would be slammed with work and have no time to really read/watch them. Man was I WRONG. As soon as we got here we had one adventure after another. Long story short, the entire city was out of fuel (yes, none at the pumps or anywhere) so they had to get an emergency delivery by barge. Furthermore, Mother Nature's furious winds prevented us from even attempting a boat trip to collect seawater. So I sat twiddling my thumbs for 4 days with no real work to do. You bet I was sure happy with the Project Runway 1st Season DVD's and the 142 Threads Magazines on DVD-ROM. I tried to check out the new Project Runway episodes online but unfortunately the internet here isn't the best for streaming. So the lesson is always bring enough materials in case you'll have alot of down time. The Threads DVD-ROM will keep me quite busy.

On Monday the winds finally calmed down and we were able to get some work done. Part of our research group went out to sea and me and another team member decided to go into town to check out a craft store we'd heard about. Well we headed to the Fur Store and it ended up being an absolute treat!

Here are some of the goodies in the store. Lots of fabric....

They had a good deal considering the small size of the store.

Exotic furs.....everything from fox, to chinchilla, rabbit, wolf and beyond. Every hide imaginable---from pig to deer. The native Inupiat Indians use these furs to line the hoods and bottoms of their parkas so they can stay warm in those -60F winters.

They even had parka patterns but for $30 a pop I kinda shy-ed away from them. The Jo-Ann's $0.99 patterns have me spoiled. LOL! I think I could get one on Ebay for alot cheaper.

The furs really had me drooling. I'm not into furs, never had been, but I appreciate the way the natives use them. They really know how to responsibly and reverentially use their resources.

And of course you need really long zippers for the parkas. That's a ton of zippers.

The store also had lots of notions, yarn, lots of trims, etc. Everything except sewing machines. The store even doubled as a florist and souvenir shop (I picked up some cute T-shirts and a great picture.) It was truly a crafter's paradise. Although I didn't purchase any fabric, for now that is---I'm planning to visit again, I enjoyed myself thoroughly. And I'm delighted to say that I feel at home at any fabric store even if it is at the top of the world!!!

Should Royalty be held to a different Fashion Standard?

I ran across this article today in which Kelly Osbourne strongly disapproved of Kate Middleton for "recycling" her clothes which means to wear them more than once. Kelly rationalized that because Kate was royalty she shouldn't be so "thrifty" by re-wearing her clothes. Instead she should get a new "dress" everyday for the mere fact that she could and to compensate for all she's giving up by being in the spotlight.

Ok, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I don't care for the drama this article stirs up but it definitely made me think. Even if I were royalty, would I want to have a dress for everyday of the year. That's 365 dresses! That number is insane!!! What's wrong with wearing your clothes more than once? Hey the average person does that. How could you ever establish and enjoy you favorite garments if you only wore them once? For me that takes the fun out of having a wardrobe. I know I repeatedly wear (and on the verge of wearing them out) clothes that I've sewn for myself. It's part of the fun for me. But that's just me. I could ask a thousand more questions on this subject but I don't care to devote the time. But I have to admit being scrutinized for re-wearing an garment is ridiculous. Trust me if those are the kinds of standards people hold famous people to then I'm glad I'm not in that spotlight.

New Fitting DVD--- "Fit Yourself by Yourself"

If you've followed along with me long enough than you know I'm all about the sewing resources. I recommend that everyone has a well stocked library filled with the best sewing resources on the market. They're an invaluable resource to any seamstress no matter the experience level.

Well I'm pretty satisfied with my book, textbooks, & DVD collection but every once in a while I run across something that I'd love to have. Well that happened today. I subscribe to emails from Silhouette Patterns and heard about an extension sale on her latest DVD, "Fit Yourself By Yourself" and just knew I had to add it to my collection. I own several of her DVD's and have always been pleased with the content and quality. Her "Achieving Great Fit with Muslins" dvd helped me when I was experiencing trouble with resolving my own pattern fitting issues. That and several fitting books helped me learn the steps on how to fit myself as well as other clients. Even if some of the information is familiar to me, just one new tip or idea can improve upon my sewing. That's what I go for. Plus, since I teach sewing lessons, I love to buy resources like these to share and recommend to my students.

When it comes to sewing I consider myself a lifetime learner. And I'm a very visual learner so videos are very helpful to me. I've learned ALOT in a short period of time due to some great resources. Anywho, I just wanted to pass this info on to anyone who's interested. It's on sale for $19.99 instead of $29.99 until 8/4. For the record I'm not getting any perks for my recommendation. Just passing on some helpful info:)

McCall 6083---Jumpsuit fever--My 3rd version!

Ok, I think I've officially exhausted this pattern! I have a black and gray version and now a navy blue version. Actually I had the blue version cut out and ready after I made the black one but then go distracted with making the gray one. Things got a little crazy. What can I say, I was suffering from JUMPSUIT FEVER!!! LOL! I've said over and over again how much I love this pattern. This blue version is my last and favorite version. It's made from a polyester suiting type fabric with some stretch. My other 2 versions were made from knit fabrics.

"Sewing Jots & Tittles" is my weekly post where I get to ramble on and on about sewing related stuff that's been on my mind. Here what's been orbiting my brain.....
-Striped tank dress
Ever since I added this picture of Kim Kardashian in a striped tank dress to my Style Look Book,

I've been wanting a cute striped tank dress. I picked up these 2 knits at Hancock fabrics & this pattern. I just have to get some solid knit to serve as a binding for the armhole and neckline. We'll see what happens.

-September Vogue
I just read HERE that the September Vogue will have almost 600 ad pages in it! If you're looking for some fashion inspiration well you'll definitely find within all of those pages. I can't wait to get my copy:)

-Bulk Elastic
Most everything I've been sewing lately has needed elastic. I definitely need to buy elastic in bulk especially since those $1.5 packages are adding up. I"ll look into that! I'll check out Atlanta Thread Supply. Anyone have any good suggestions?

-New Shoes
I ran across the cutest shoes drastically marked down to $9 each.

(I'm happy I picked up a blue and yellow pair. I LOVE this style of shoe and have a tan and pink pair similar to these. I wish I could've bought them for these prices though.)

-McCall Fall Patterns
I'm not usually happy about planning my fashions for the fall because the thought of Summer coming to an end is a sad one. However looking at the new McCall fall patterns has gotten me excited about cool weather sewing.

I especially love 6396 (upper left pattern) and have already bought a great plaid for it. Now I just have to wait for cold weather. Around her it will be a while---maybe until November.

I saw these knit leggings the other day that were printed to look like jeans. How hilarious!

NON-Sewing Stuff:

I'm completely addicted to this brand of Kettlecorn. I used to eat kc but stopped a few years back. I stumbled on this brand and am hooked. Yes, here's a now empty bag I purchased less than 18 hours ago. This stuff never sticks around. It's SO good! I eat so much of it that my lips swell a little from all of the salt. I may need some therapy for this addiction. LOL!

I'm completely obsessed with Bravo's Million Dollar Decorator's reality show. Have you seen it? It's awesome. Being a small business owner, I'm captivated by these other business owners who use the Interior Decorating skills to work on multi million dollar projects. Each designer has their own personality, style, and astetic. Plus I love to see how they interact with their clients which range from easy to please to raging lunatics. I'd love to one day work on Million dollar projects one day! A girl can dream, huh?

Style Flash Back: Valentine's Day Dress 1998

I was snuggling with "the Wee-One" in bed on yesterday morning when she pointed to a picture on my dresser. The funny thing was that she asked me why I was wearing one of Grandma's wigs, since Grandma has a similar hairstlye. After I giggled, I went on to explain to her that I had a shorter hair cut years ago and that the picture was taken on Valentine's Day.

It's funny, just that short description took me back in time 13 years ago to my first Valentine's Day with my hubby, back then boyfriend. Wow, I was SO much younger and still was just a Freshman in college. If I recall correctly Sears was hosting a photo special where they'd do your make up and take your picture all for a special price. And you know me---I LOVE specials!!!! I'd just had all of my hair hacked off and golden highlights added. For the life of me, I can't remember where I bought the dress. I think it may have been Sears but can't really remember. All I know is at that time it was my FAVORITE and it would only be fitting for me to wear it to the photo shoot. So I wore it and the picture my daughter was asking me about was the result.

It's sad that this dress has been tucked into a mesh bag and sitting at the bottom of my fabric closet for years. But I really did love this dress. It was sexy, understated, and unique. Obviously I still have it and couldn't bring myself to let it go. So I pulled it out to examine it since it's been so long. It's such a pretty work of art. It's a fitted dress with spaghetti straps, a black mesh overlay placed over a polyester printed knit fabric with Victorian like images of women on it.

It's amazing to reflect back on your fashions. Although mine might not have been as refined or focused as now alot of my choices then were a signature to the style that I still subscribe to. I enjoyed this flash back. It just reminds me of how I appreciate unique and artistic things. Which is why I love sewing because it gives me the chance to be the artist (wink)!

McCall's 6326- Mustard Yellow One Strap Top

I just made it back from vacationing/visiting my In-Law's in Florida and I mentioned in my last post, I made a few items to take with me. I took both my black and gray jumpsuits and the below top.
I first played around with this pattern HERE. I didn't have much success with it due to a bad fabric choice and the fact that I refused to take it apart and make the necessary adjustments. Well I decided to give another view a shot but with a few modifications and that's how I ended up with my top! I absolutely love it! It's one of those tops that I could have 10 of, but I'll try not to go overboard with it.

Pattern Description:
Close fitting top with shoulder elastic casing

Pattern Sizing:
I cut the size 10

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, but I made a few modifications which I'll describe below.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Pretty much!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved the overall design!

Fabric Used:
A lycra knit in a mustard color. The pictures don't do it justice. It's such a great color. Also, the lycra is great because it provides control to such a fitted top.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

1. Slashed and spread the pattern 2". I didn't want the lower half of the top to be fitted. I wanted it to flare out a bit.
2. Lengthened the pattern 2"
3. I ended taking out about an inch or 2 out of the shoulder strap so it wouldn't be loose.
4. I also tacked the shoulder strap to the back bodice piece.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Oh yeah! I have some royal blue lycra waiting to be transformed into another top.

Conclusion:
I love, love, love, love, love this top a thousand time over! It is so my style!

And of course after almost 2 weeks of being apart (she was at Grandma & PaPa's house) I was reunited with my Wee-One! I enjoyed my little break (and got to sew up a storm) but there's nothing better than being a Mom!!!

Tales from the Dressing Room........

I've decided to add "Tales from the Dressing Room" as a regular (and fun) feature to my blog which showcases my analysis of Ready to Wear (RTW) fashions. I really like trying on RTW clothes and analyzing their fit. I'm able to incorporate what I learn into what I sew for myself. Plus it's another easy way to figure out what works for me and to test drive new styles. It's funny because in the past I really dreaded going to Fitting Rooms, especially before I could sew. I was always disappointed when things wouldn't fit right or be off a little.Once I realized that I could customized my own clothing I stopped being disappointed with RTW. I If I want something I can just go make it myself or I can choose to buy RTW at a good price. Having options has really relieved my stress and now I love dressing rooms. Anyway here's the first post:

I went into town this past Saturday to pick up elastic at Jo-Ann's and made a stop into TJ Maxx to see if there were any major clothes or shoes sales. I'm not one for buying clothes unless I can buy them for much cheaper that it will cost to make them. Case in point when I was in Florida a week or so ago I bought those 10 pieces of clothes for around $34 which averaged a a little over $3 a piece. Now that was a steal!!! Out of the clothes I purchased one item was a brown pair of comfortable capris which I paid only $6 for but retailed at around $40. Come on, at $6 I'd rather buy the capris and spend time sewing up something else.

So back to my story, I went to TJ Maxx and noticed that there were rack's of capri on clearance. During Spring & Summer, aside from dresses, capris are pretty much all that I wear---especially at work. I definitely could stand to get a few especially since they were on sale. I grabbed a few of them and went to the dressing room to try them on and here's what came of my efforts........

(I found this cute pair of black sateen capris with zippers at the hem. They fit like a glove and were very cute. Since I needed a pair of black capris I swooped these up to buy.)

(I thought I'd give some short shorts a try. Well once again I'm reminded why I don't like to wear short shorts. I just don't feel comfortable in them. I like short shorts, just not on myself. Since my legs are so long I just think capris balance out my body much better. I love to see others in them. If I were just a little thicker and a little shorter I'd sport these because they probably wouldn't look SO short on me.)

(Now this is more of my speed!!! I love cargo style capris with lots of top stitching, zippers, etc) These are just awesome and oh so comfortable.)

(Look at those details up close. These are great!!! To be honest with you I would hate to sew this. It would honestly drive me insane. There's more details on these pants than I'd care to sew up. Isn't that sad. But for $13 I'd gladly buy these.)

(I loved how these tan capris fit near my hips but the longer length aged me a bit. I needed a shorter, hipper style. So I had to skip on these.)

(These were cute cargo pants in black with a ruffled hem but they didn't not fit my backside well at all. They weren't contoured to fit my bottom and the lack of pants depth caused them to stick out away from my body instead of cup it. Look at all that excess fabric. If I were wider and flatter in the seat then these would have fit me. But that's just not my body shape.)

(Well I started with 8 pairs of pants/capri/short. I don't have the best luck with finding pants & capris since I'm super picky about their fit. Being a seamstress will make you like that (wink)!)

(These are the only 2 capris that I ended up with and I'm happy with my finds.)

Well that was my dressing room adventures. I'll definitely have more in the future.....

What about you, do you like to try on clothes? If you sew, have you found it easier to face dressing room disappointments? Or do you like to skip the dressing room all together and take it home and return it if necessary (I often do this)? What say ye?

McCall's 6083 again......another jumpsuit!

As I mentioned in my sewing goals on yesterday I just completed another jumpsuit! I promise you this is the EASIEST thing to sew up. Just takes a few short hours. And it's SO comfortable. You may recall my black version. I've had it cut out and ready to sew for a couple of weeks. I finally was able to stitch it up a few days ago and wear it to a dinner party on last night. It was a big hit!!! I have Erica B. to thank for the inspiration! I loved her gray version and since I didn't want to make it in another dark color like brown or a light color like white (which is TOO light and a dirt magnet), gray seemed like a better option for me. I think the fabric is a polyester knit in Heather gray. I do have a 3rd version in the works. It's cut out in navy blue suiting (I plan to sew it up before the months' end). I could wear one everyday!!! Ok that's going overboard LOL! You know what I mean. I Jumpsuits!!!!

(My version is super long so I can wear it with heels. I'm wearing it with flip flops here.)

May /June 2011: 10,000 Sewing Hours Challenge Review &July/ Aug: 10,000 Hr. Challenge Goals

First of all, thanks so much for all of your nice comments about my Tracy Reese dress. You Guys are always so kind:)

I'm still trying to catch up on posts and although we're 11 days into the month and I've been working on my sewing challenges for the month. If you're new to my blog, you can see my 10,000 Sewing hours challenge outlined on the right side of my blog. Before I get into July & August's sewing details those here's a quick recap of my May and June sewing.
To be quite honest May and June were horrible sewing months for me. I ended up sewing 2 pieces---only 2---but they were 2 of my favorites....

.... My normal monthly plan is around 6-8 pieces! I even had 2 garments cut out and ready to be sewn but I just didn't get around to it and I did have 1 wadder (those white pants). BUT.... I spent alot of time doing sewing related activities. I discovered my style and created a Style Look Book which was a great turning point in helping me get focused on the type of sewing I need and prefer to do. So although May & June didn't produce more than a couple of garments it's given me the energy to be agressive with my July & August's sewing goals.

So for July and August here's a few sewing ideas that I've had in mind and have already began sewing up. I have to run out for a party so I don't have time to expound on the designs but you can see the pattern matched up with the fabrics I plan to use. This isn't the entire 2 months sewing plan but enough ideas to get me started.

I'm pretty excited that I've already completed 2 garments (the Tracy Reese dress from yesterday and another Jumpsuit in gray (I'll post pics soon). You see one slow couple of months really kicks me back into action. Before I leave town this week I plan to have 2 more pieces sewn up. So that means I would've essentially sewn up 4 items in a little over a week. Again my "Wee-One" has been away at Grandma & Papa's house so I've been really able to compound some sewing hours and catch up!!!

Well I've got to run off to the party. I'm wearing my newly sewn gray jumpsuit so I get to be cute tonight (smile). Happy sewing.....

Vogue 1224--Another Great Tracy Reese dress!

I've had this multi color rayon jersey fabric in my stash for a few months and have been anxiously trying to find the right pattern to got with it. I was happy when I finally settled on this Tracy Reese dress. I think this simple yet pretty design shows off the beauty of the fabric and overall both help to make a cute and fun dress. Here's my review.....

Vogue 1224

Pattern Description:
Partially lined, pullover dress has short dolman sleeves, elasticized waistline and neckline with tie ends, stitched hems and above mid-knee length. Purchased stoppers for tie ends.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a size 12 for the bodice and graded up to a 14 for the waist and skirt.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, Yes, Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Pretty much!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
The sleeves and elasticized neckline.

Fabric Used:
Rayon Jersey from Jo-Ann's. I think it came from one of the tribal collections.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
-I added about 7" to the length since this bad boy was pretty short and would extra short on me since I'm tall. I figured mid knee length would be good for me especially since I wanted to sometimes wear this to church.
-For the record I always end up using much less elastic than recommended. This rayon jersey was so stretchy that I had to tighten the elastic up a bit to keep the dress from stretching out of shape too much.
-Also I didn't use the casing pattern. Instead I created a casing out of the seam allowance. I made a 6/8" s.a. instead of the normal 5"8. I serged the s.a. edge and left a bit open to insert the elastic. I didn't bother sewing the casing to the skirt.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think so, it's such a cute little dress. I'd love to make it in a solid color so the design details shows much better.

Conclusion:
Cute fun and quick little dress!

Style discovery / Look Book

I just finished cutting out 3 patterns (hoping to sew up a bunch before my vacation--will blog about later) and I thought I'd take a quick moment before bedtime to write a post I've been itching to write for the LONGEST! You may recall in May that I did 2 posts (Style Safari I & Style Safari II) which centered around my my quest to better understand my style. Well over the last month I must say that I think I've figured it out. Mind you one's style is forever evolving but I really have come to define my style. The following words sums up my style pretty well:

Simple

Feminine

Colorful

Fun

Youthful

Classy w/ a little Sass (wink!)

Effortless

Timeless

Modern

Elegant (on special occasions)

These words definitely describe my style. For the most part you've seen my work. What do you think? Did I describe it well? Am I missing anything? I don't know of any particular style category that I would fit in but I'm not one for categorizing myself anyway. I love what I love. And I love to make clothes that make me feel as I've describe above.

Around the time I was exploring my style I also decided that I would create a "Style Look Book". I have to admit that this project, which will always be ongoing, helped me narrow down my style attributes. I started it about a couple of weeks ago. I had a ton of old fashion magazines that I was preparing to recycle and I'm so happy I didn't. I threw on " The Kennedy's" miniseries on Netflix (I loved watching this. It's interesting to learn from the lives other's have lived, especially such prominent figure) and began ripping out pages and cutting out looks that caught my eye. It was so therapeutic and relaxing and not to mention FUN! I found an old, unused photo album and thought it would be perfect. There's nothing fancy about it's exterior.....it's really boring.....

but we all know that the good stuff is inside. Take a look at a few of my pages......

I've got tons more pictures and magazines to go through and add. Trust me by the time I'm done, and it may take a few years, there will be no empty spaces left.

I kept the construction and organization of this Style Look Book simple. I organized pictures based on whether they were full outfits or separates and grouped them somewhat by season and category (fancy, casual, etc.) I have a habit of over complicating things and didn't want to do this with my Look Book. I mostly used old subscriptions of Lucky and Harper Bazaar magazines and found great materials in them. I LOVE my book!!! It's really inspired me to try some new looks and revamp some old ones. Anywho.....how do you describe your style? Also, how do you get your style inspiration? Do you have a look book or style board?

Sewing Jots & Tittles 7.6.11---Orlando Edition

I made it back from Orlando and am trying to play catch up. Hubby & I dropped the "Wee-One" off with Grandma & Pa-Pa (she'll be staying with them for 11 days) and hung out for a few days in Orlando. Trust me when Grandma and Pa-Pa showed up, she was no longer my child anyway! LOL! You know what I mean! Gotta love the Grandparents:)

Anywho, I'm so behind on posting and sewing and will be definitely making several posts this week. I miss my little one but while she's away having fun with my In-Law's I can do alot of sewing---but I'll post about that later this week.

Here's some highlights from my quick weekend trip:

-We got to hang out Universal Studio's and Islands of Adventures and it's amazing all the different types of clothing I saw from a variety of people from various countries. I got a little inspiration and did some rough sketches (emphasizing the word rough) of outfits I wanted. I couldn't find paper so the hotel stationary did the trick. You'll see some of these in my sewing plans later this week:)

I also saw a few dresses for sale within the parks that definitely tickled my fancy. I love maxi and strapless dresses in the summer time. Especially in loud and bold prints!!!

-I went to only one Jo-Ann. I know, I didn't go to all of the sewing stores in a 20 mile radius but I tried not to make this trip all about me LOL! But I have to admit it was the most pitiful thing. They hardly had anything. It was the sadest Jo-Ann's. This is all I left with. Upper left fabric is a cotton with great colors and the red and white palms are a cotton twill I think. Below are a few patterns I took interest in.

Mind you, I don't shop for fabrics all that much any more, but I love the thought of visiting a new Jo-Ann's and finding fabrics I hadn't seen at my local store. Not really the case here:(

-I hit the "mother lode" actually when we were leaving Orlando and stopped off in another city to grab a bite to eat. I hadn't shopped my entire trip--with the exception of food. I ran across a Beall's Outlet Clearance center. The building was almost empty except for a few racks of clothes that were drastically discounted. I got 10 pieces of clothes for like $37. It was crazy!!! Several cowl neck knit blouses for $2.40 ea. Two bathing suits (right) regularly $94 were marked down to $6. I sew my own bathing suits but will gladly buy cute one's at that price.

I also picked up a couple of novelty t-shirts and some brown capri's and striped top. The necklace was a cute bonus too. God blessed me to find some really great bargains and I'm always happy for that!!!!

I thought I'd try out another Beall's outlet across the street and picked up a few pieces of jewelry from there...

I love pretty medallions!!!

A fun highlight of the trip was I got to visit Joe's Crab Shack with a few family member who were also in town. What a fun and lively place. It was interesting to watch the servers stop what they were doing like every 15 minutes and dance to music. I haven't seen that many people dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in a while! LOL!We don't have one in Savannah so it was fun and the food was awesome. I loved the dungeness crab!!! Yum!

I received a special bib for ordering one of the Crab steam pots.......

What do you do when you want to SEW SOOOOO VERY bad but you can't? Well you watch others do it!!!!

I'm going out of town to visit Orlando, Fl for a few days and will have fun watching these DVD's (in addition to hunting down fabric stores (wink)). You can never get enough of Project Runway re-run's. BTW, the new Project Runway Season 9 (has it really been 9 seasons, that's crazy!!!)...anywho it debuts July 28th, 9pm on Lifetime!!!! Can't wait!!!!

Vacation Sewing:

-This month is my vacation month (yeah, woo-hoo, yipee) and I've got to make a few items to take with me. I'm pulling out patterns and fabric now---so I'm in planning mode. One garment I know will be another jumpsuit--I've already bought the fabric and have prepped it. The other items will be cute and simple---and probably mostly knit. To me there's nothing cooler, especially since we're heading down South to Florida. Besides, I'll be dropping the Wee-One off at Grandma & Grandpa's for a week, so that will free up lots of time for sewing!!!! Can't wait until I organize those plans.

3 Waiting in the Wings:
-I have 3 garments that are cut out and ready to be sewn. I have no idea how I got so backed up like that. I need to figure out something fast, especially with Vacation Sewing that needs to be done. They may have to sit on the backburner until I make it through the Vacation sewing. Sigh......

New Fashion Shows on Bravo
-In August, when the Rachel Zoe's show new season begins (I've never been a huge fan but I do occassionally watch it) there will be 2 new fashion shows.
One is Fashion Hunters and the other Mad Fashion. Fashion Hunters focuses on employees of the Second Time Thrift store that is known for it's high end merchandise. Mad Fashion is pretty much self explanatory in that it deals with the crazy fashion sense of Chris March, former Project Runway Alum. Banana Republic
-I saw this dress in the Banana Republic store window in Downtown Savannah a week ago. Isn't it just gorgeous. The simplicity of the design and those beautiful, soft watercolors. So breathtaking.

Fabric from Lisbon
-I had some Co-Workers/Friend recently travel to Europe and while they were in Lisbon, Portugal looked what they picked up for me. I love Fabric from other countries. Plus it's a knit----what a treat!!!

A Funny:
I saw this in the current Vogue Pattern magazine and it made me chuckle.We seamstresses are truly artists!!!

Try Fast, Fail Fast / 1000 Pair of Pants???

So I was doing a little research the other day pertaining to the habits of successful people. Most of you have read the book "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" (I've read some of it and it's still on my reading list). But every now and again I need a refresher. You know you get into a slump and don't feel like you're getting much accomplished.
Well during an online search I ran across an interesting website---www.lifeoptimizer.org. I ran across the article "5 Winning Habits of Successful People-Do you Have Them All?". Needless to say at first glance the article offered the usual and common advice of 1. Having an end in mind, 2. Have a support group, etc. But it was habit # 5 that really stuck out to me. Habit #5 is "Try fast, fail fast, keep trying and never give up. There was something about that point that REALLY stuck out to me. I've never entertained the notion of "try fast & fail fast". I interpret this phrase as don't waste any time. Get in there and give it a go and if you fail, do so, get it over with and take another stab at it! So I started to think about this concept when it comes to my sewing. I can't tell you how often I seem to "mourn" over a failed project or how often I put off giving a sewing project a try due to a feeling of intimidation. What I'm learning to do is just go for it. Heck, OUT with all of the reservation!!!! Just take a stab at it. Ok, I might not know EXACTLY what I'm doing but that's where learning comes in, huh? But we should never let the fear of failure prevent us from giving something a try. What have I got to lose. So if I waste 5 yards of silk, It's only fabric, right? LOL (wink)!
Well as I mentioned in my last post, I had the notion to sew up some white pants and that's exactly what I did this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't have stellar results. I used the Jalie 2909 pattern that I sewed up HERE. The pants which are a cotton sateen turned out great with the exception of the back leg wrinkles. I had this problem when I originally sewed this pattern in black cotton sateen but they seem to be more pronounced in white.

(Front turned out great, just like last year's version)

(The fit on my bum is good, it's the upper leg wrinkles that I detest.)

Either way, although I sewed up my pants and they didn't turn out as perfectly as I wanted them I'm happy I just did it anyway. Sewing very fitted pants is a special skill and I just need to figure out how to reduce the length of back leg pant on this pattern. I already found this helpful info and I have some other resources to check out. I'll take any of your suggestions as well. Also, I have other pants patterns I plan to give a go at. I have pants I want to deconstruct and convert into patterns and ultimately I plan to draft up my pants sloper. I've enjoyed sewing & fitting pants because it's so complex and I learn something new every time!
So I'm cool. I can't wait to have another go at it. I just have to get some more white fabric. But I'm left with the lasting thought of "Try fast, fail fast, keep trying and never give up". Again, I love the "try fast & fail fast" part. What a great reminder!!!! You can't just embrace your success without doing so with your failures. It's your failures that makes success so sweet! Besides, it's been said that Thomas Edison tried more than 1,000 times to develop the filament for the light bulb . When asked about this Edison simply said " I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb." What a great response!!!!! He's also quoted at saying "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time".
Such wise words!!! So let's get out there and push the boundaries of our experience. Remember: "Try fast, fail fast, keep trying and never give up"!!!

Sewing Jots & Tittles 6.16.11

"Sewing Jots & Tittles" is my weekly post where I get to ramble on and on about sewing related stuff that's been on my mind. Here what's been orbiting my brain.....

Jumpsuit Love & Reveal:
Thanks so much for all of the compliments on my jumpsuit!!! I can honestly say that that was one of the easiest garments to sew that yielded in my opinion really great results. It was super easy! There was one hitch that I forgot to mention on my post. The matte jersey I used was a light weight and a tad bit see through believe it or not--only if you held it to the light. I took pictures early that afternoon when the sun was shining it's brightest and realized that only on camera (clears throat) I could see slightly through the backside. I had to wait until the sunset to take another pic. I don't think I ever experienced this with photographing fabrics before. That was interesting and believe me from now on I'll pay close attention to how my slightly sheer fabrics photograph from now on. I don't want to end up like some of these celebrities with pictures of their unmentionables showing through their black clothes! LOL!

Sewing Machine Scale Back
It's funny when I bought my first machine I felt it was so basic and I longed to have a machine with more bells and whistles. It's ironic that just the other day it was my first sewing machine that saved me from a jam when my fancier machine had to go into the shop. It has taken me a couple of years to realize that I only need a nice, reputable and basic machine. I'm kinda past all of the bells and whistles. I think my first sewing machine's name pretty much sums it up........Simplicity:)

Costume Jewelry:
I love jewelry and especially really pretty jewelry for discount prices. I'm not interested at all in any real or really expensive jewelry. I scored these pieces at Cato's the other day. I acquire my jewelry piece by piece . One can never have enough great jewelry!

Bottom basics:
I can't really bring myself to sew pants of any color other than the basics being Black, khaki, white, and blue. As you know I LOVE COLOR, but am very cautious about putting it on my lower half. I wonder what that's all about. I think it's because I know that my lower half is so long that I don't want it to stand out too much. But then again I like basic colored pants and to wear tops that stand out instead. I don't know. I need to figure this one out.

Pick up the Pace:
-Since May, I've only sewed 3 garments and we're almost half way through June. I've got to get a move on it. I hope to get at least 3-4 more pieces in before the end of the month.

Fabric shopping freeze:
-I just realized I haven't bought fabric online in forever. I just haven't seen anything that has tickled my fancy or any bargains. It would be nice to run across some deals in the future, but I've got a closet full of fabric so I'm not complaining:)

Threads Book:
I saw this book for sale and noticed alot of people making a big deal about it. It's basically Threads favorite articles compiled in book form. I already have the 2010 Threads DVD so it would be no need to get this book but I've heard so much about it. Anybody have this one?

White Pants:
I want some white pants so I just cut some out using Jalie 2909. I'm always leary about sewing anything white. It seems I'm always the biggest dust and dirt magnet. I own a pair of store bought capris and I'm going to eventually have to trash them due to some mystery stains. Since I know it would be difficult for me to find the perfect pair of white pants that were long enough for me and didn't cost an arm and a leg---I'll just make my own. Now if I can just figure out a way to make it dirt repellent.

Chiffon mania:
I've been wanting to make some sheer tunics and caftans. Here's some of the fabrics that I have. I hope to make up one of these to wear with the white pants I'm making.

Work Uniform?
I've mentioned before that I work in a research lab and giving the type of work that I do it's really not acceptable or functional for me to dress up in heels and dressy clothes. So I've had to figure a way around that--because a girl has got to look cute right? I usually like to wear capri's with cute tops and sneakers or sandals. Other times I like to spruce it up a little more. Here's such an outfit--a black sleeveless top, white & black cotton skirt, short leggings, and flip flops. This is an awful self pic with bad lighting. But hopefully you get an idea of what I mean. What do ya think?

Anywho, that's what's been up with me. What's been going on with you?????

McCall's 6380--- Jumpsuit for Date Night!

This weekend was a fun one for me! As I mentioned in my last post, my daughter's Godparents kept her for the weekend which gave me an Hubby a "Wee-One Free" weekend. So we definitely wanted to have a fun weekend together. We decided to spend Saturday out and about and Sunday vegging out in the house. So of course I wanted a cute outfit to wear for our outing on Saturday. I'd been wanting to make a jumper for quite some time. I fell in love with the McCall 6083 pattern and figured it would be a good choice. And it was!!! But it almost didn't happen. Half way through sewing my jumpsuit my Brother sewing machine (the one I just sent to the shop early last month) started jamming. I almost panicked but I was determined to finish this jumpsuit--- even if I had to handsew it LOL! Fortunately I used a back up (the first machine I ever bought) whichI hadn't used in 4 years and "she" worked great for me ---and didn't even hold a grudge (smile)! I'm happy things worked out because I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this jumpsuit! I've got a couple more in the works and in different fabrics! So here's my jumpsuit.....

McCall 6083
Pattern Description:

Jumpsuit has side front pockets, elastic casings and stitched hem and sash. I made view C.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut the size 10 for the bodice and 12 for the hips and below.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yep, yep!!!

(Love those pockets. BTW, couldn't wear cute strappy sandals due to a hurt big toe:(

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Super easy!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved everything about this pattern! There were no dislikes!

Fabric Used:
Matte jersey

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't have to make any major alterations which was nice. I always get nervous when I'm making pants that I will have to do some major crotch adjustment. None was needed in this case.

1. Added 1" length to bodice----I made a muslin and thought the front and back pieces could use a little more length.
2. Added 3" length to the hem.

(Loved the necklace---black tiny beads with larger wooden beads and mother of pearl shell medallion).

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
ABSOULUTELY!!!! I love this jumpsuit and already have another cut out and ready to sew.

Conclusion:
Love this pattern! It's well drafted and the fit is great! I plan to make a few more!

Jumpsuit vs Romper

I'm definitely not a trendy person. I make/buy clothes not because they're trendy but because I genuinely like them. I've been eye-balling those cute rompers and jumpsuits that I've seen around lately and honestly have taken to them. I blogged a couple of months back that I wanted to make a jumpsuit.With my upcoming "Date Night" this weekend, I definitely want to wear something fashionable and sexy and I can't think of a better garment. But I'm having a hard time deciding on whether to make a romper or jumpsuit. My dilemma is I have really long legs (I'm probably 80% legs with a short torso) and I don't really wear short clothing because I don't want to walk around exposing most of my body and risk feeling naked. Of course I have no problem with wearing short shorts, etc. at the beach but it's different when you're just out and about walking around town. I definitely love the idea of a jumpsuits since they differ from rompers.

But I was still a little curious about those rompers, especially since I didn't know too much about them. I know there's lots of styles and I wanted to familiarize myself with them to see if they'd suit my style. So I decided to do a little research to see suggestions on how to wear them. I ran across the following sites and articles:

These sites offered tips on how to wear rompers and frankly aside from wearing one at the beach, it's NOT for me. They're just WAY too short for me---some scandalously so! If I was a little shorter I definitely would wear them--but only the tasteful one's. To be quite honest some of the rompers in silkier fabrics looks like lingerie. I assumed they came in various lengths but have noticed that the rompers are short shorts while the playsuits (some) and jumpsuit are usually longer in leg length. It seems the latter 2 options would work better for me. I even love the idea of a cropped leg jumpsuit. I love this style right here....

I don't really like the fullness of the pants legs but I love the length and elasticized hem. And besides, this goes better with my style anyway. I'm not really a shorts wearer but love Capri's. I'm thinking about modifying my McCall 6083 jumpsuit pattern and cropping the pants leg. I'm interested in making the upper right version.

I'll mull it over on tomorrow and decide what to do. Straight, long pants or cropped, elasticized pants? Hmmmm, decisions, decisions. I'll figure it out. But in the meantime I'm interested in your opinion. Are you a big romper or jumpsuit fan? Why or why not?

Feeling Real Motivated.......

Thank God it's Friday!!! It's been a heck of a week! I never mean to be away from blog land long but things have been crazy. I prepared all last week and early this week for a research presentation for my peers on Wednesday. I was nervous but made it through and delivered a good presentation. I have "Sarayu" to thank for helping me through it all (if you've read the Shack by William P Young then you understand the reference (wink)). Needless to say that after having delivered something I spent so long preparing for, I really wanted to get to a fabric store and unwind by checking out some fabrics. But I couldn't get away so I did the next best thing, treated myself to one of my favorite lunches.

I love a cranberry and feta cheese salad with balsamic dressing. In addition, a friend was nice enough to make a gluten free treat for after my talk (treats are a part of our weekly talks) so I got a fruit pizza (cookie crust, cream cheese and fruit) out of the deal . It was a nice way to end a somewhat stressful day. And I can honestly admit that in just under 3 minutes I inhaled half of the missing section of that pizza LOL! It was GOOD!

Since I spent most of the week preparing for my presentation, all I've had time to do is stalk everyone's blogs. And man, many of you guys (or technically, Ladies) have been super busy and productive. So my little sewing hiatus has made me antsy. I have this project on my cutting table right now and am hoping to finish it up this weekend.

At the same time I've been working on creating a "Style Look Book" containing all of those pictures I've been ripping out of my fashion magazines. This is actually a fun exercise for me and one I'll always do--and it's so helpful. I've always had an inspiration board but it's kinda cool to create my own look book. I just have a basic photo album that I'll create sections in and add different looks to. It's amazing how simple and straightforward my style is.

I can honestly say that I've figured out my style pattern but I'll talk more about that later. Lastly, next weekend will be a "Wee-One" free weekend (thanks to great Godparents) so that means the entire weekend my Hubby and I will be hanging out catching up on some well needed personal time. So I'm putting some looks together for our "Date Weekend" (including some activities). Here's some of the patterns I'm looking at.

These were items I was planning to sew up anyway but they're very fitting for the occasion. I just want to keep it fun, simple, and sexy!!! I'll be sewing like mad all next week. I can't wait!!!

Love at First Sight.......

I"m hard pressed to believe in the concept of "Love at First Sight" when it comes to people (it happens just not as frequently as some may think) but I am a believer in it when it comes down to the way I choose my fabric. For years I couldn't understand my connection and "instinct" when it came to buying certain fabrics. I always just had a gut feeling and attraction to the fabrics I chose. I've come to realize that I intuitively select my fabric and this is something I've grown accustomed to.

To clarify, there are 3 ways that I shop for fabrics. I purchase fabrics specifically for a project, I purchase a fabric because it may be pretty, on sale, and I have a use for it, and I purchase a fabric because of "love at first sight". Again, it's fabric buying for the last category that intrigues me the most.
Case in point, just the other day I was at Hancock Fabrics and ran across this little number. I hadn't bought a piece of fabric in a good while. I looked at it and I just knew. Right then in there I wouldn't have been able to give you a detailed explanation of why I liked it (intuitive people feel before they can usually explain anyway) but it was that initial "love" that let me know I needed to get it. Looking at it now I can tell you it's the colors (I LOVE the yellow mixed with the red, dark blue and gray) and paisely pattern that I love. The picture does it NO justice. I grabbed 2.5 yd and will scout out the perfect pattern for it later.

I have to admit, some of my most memorably sewn pieces came from fabric selected in the same manner.
I love my Easter Dress and although I had a pattern picked out but it was the fabric that I made an "instant connection" with.

This dress is one of my FAVORITE'S!!!! And Lord knows when I picked up that print I had no earthly idea what I was going to do with it. Those circles are HUGE! But there was just something about it that intrigued me about it and I'm so glad I got it!

Here are a few other fabric in my stash in which the same thing happened. I love unique prints and colors.....

I don't buy fabric as often as I used to. I'm not into impulse buys or collecting---my fabric closet is full already. And although I try to be careful and discriminatory in my decisions to buy fabrics I ALWAYS, for the most part, give into these "love at first sight" moments because I believe it's in those times that I can see the the raw nature of my creativity at work. Trust me, for a person who's as careful, intentional, and frugal as I am, it's good to have a moment of raw instinct:)

Sewing Jots & Tittles 5.20.11

- Button Lovin'--After sewing my last dress I've found a new love for sewing buttons. I prefer invisible zipper since they are my favorite notion but I have to admit, sewing buttonholes and buttons was less of a chore than I originally thought. My sewing machine makes it a piece of cake and for the first time I used my machine to sew on my buttons which was super easy. I don't know why I was dreading it in the first place.

-New Muslin

My new "muslin" which I mentioned in this post finally arrived. It's thin and quite translucent but very strong. And it's much less expensive than other forms of tracing materials. I can't wait to give it a try. I found out they actually sell this stuff in wider widths so I might look into getting a huge roll of that and fold it in half to cut. The wider one's are use when setting up septic tanks and go on the bottom of them. It's amazing how such a product can be used in sewing:)

-Iron Demineralizer--

I have a Consew steam generating iron and it works absolutely great! I've only used distilled water in the past but had to use filtered tap water when I ran out. I noticed it wasn't steaming up as normal and had a feeling that minerals were building up in my iron. Well I added the demineralizer and my iron was back to normal. Moral of the story, ALWAYS use the DEMINERALIZER!

-Pure Puzzlement:
I had to go shopping for "undergarments" this weekend. It's not my favorite thing and feels like more a chore. As we all know, elastic doesn't last forever and to keep from looking like . Anyway to make the process easier I always bring one of my bras in and use it as a template for the one's I try on and buy. Anyway I saw this bra and thought it was rather funny. I don't know about you, but I surely don't buy a bra to "minimize" anything---accentuate is more like it. It's a 36C (my size), is that even large enough to try and minimize???? I know there are some women who do but I'll leave this one for them! LOL!

-Skyscraper shoes--

Ross' Dress for Less is my favorite place to shop for shoes. There I can get great shoes (some big brand names) shoes at drastically reduced prices. I ran across these little babies and couldn't pass them up. They are gorgeous but they have like a 4" heel on them. Ok, I know I'm going to be like 10 ft tall in these, but I can't pass out a great pair of heels, especially when they're only $16.

-Pattern for this Fabric
I absolutely LOVE this fabric! The colors are pretty awesome---white, gray, orange, olive, and silver abstract print that's sheer and crinkly. I have in mind what type of dress I want I'm just waiting to see an exact picture of it so I can copy it.

Denim Print knit---

Don't ask but I want this for a project so badly! I saw some jeggings a WalMart long ago and they were actually not denim, but a knit with a denim print! How clever is that. I want some of that fabric!!! Has anyone seen any anywhere?

-Palmer and Pletsch Jeans DVD

I read on another blog that P &P came out with a new DVD. I'm actually excited and it's one on a great topic---sewing jeans. First of all, I don't really need it and could sew a pair quite fine without it but I have most all of the DVD's and am pretty much a collector at this point (plus I love their interfacing). Besides I'm a visual learner and it's always nice to pick up a couple of new ideas and different approaches to doing something. I'm ALWAYS learning:)

So that's what's been on my mind. What's been on yours?

Style Safari--Part II: Eureka Moment!

As I mentioned in my initial Style Safari post, I am on a journey to Really discover my style. I understand our styles are forever evolving but I want to get a good handle on mine so I can sew better clothing options for myself. I have a good idea what my style is (hint: most of what I've sewn reflects it). I found it interesting that many of you were sorta in the same place and that others of you felt you had a pretty good understanding of what your style is. No matter which "side of the fence" you're on, clothing is a reflection of who we are and gaining perspective and understanding of one's style is a great thing.

The "Style Safari" post came on the eve of my dilemma with the "one hit wonder dresses" in my closet. These are dresses I've made and only wore once and pretty much lost interest in (detailed in this post. ). I was trying to figure why that was the case and which many of you offered some great comments/advice on my dilemma but I think it was Heather who really nailed it. Her comment was....

I know I'm super late to comment on this post, but it actually took your post from today to jog my thought process on it. I think you (and maybe me) look at your projects as art pieces. They're planned for a certain event, they invoke a certain mood, and you love them when you wear them for that event. Then it's over, like the party or Mother's Day, and you don't think of them again because you're on to the next art project. Artists don't paint the same thing twice.

So maybe instead of making an art piece for a special event, you consider making art pieces for Mondays, or Thursdays. That way you can enjoy them more often? Just a thought. I'm trying to apply that to my own way of sewing, too.

Wow, Heather I think you, as they say, "hit the nail with the hammer". That's a great explanation and is similar to the conclusion I arrived at, except you thought of the whole "artwork" analogy! Just Brilliant! And it makes sense. I only had this problem with my "special occasion" dresses not all of the other items I've sewn. I realized that alot of my "special occasion dresses" were just "too special". I've resolved myself to not "back myself into a corner" so to speak with some of my style options. That's one of the mail reasons I don't like alot of trends. I don't want my work to be easily "dated" but instead I want to create clothes that can "go the distance" and get alot of wear. You know, create some timeless pieces that really stretch my wardrobe. I think Mary said it best with her comment "I tend to make things which can be worn in a variety of situations-so I don't really have any lonely pieces".

Great suggestion Mary and that's the direction I want to go more towards. As I investigate further, I'm proud to say that I'm really getting a grasp for my style. Again, I had an idea before but now it's all really coming together. It's amazing what happens when you actually stop and really think through your choices. I've discovered so much so far and am having so much fun. I can't wait to show you what I've discovered.......more later.....

Butterick 5600-- A Dress for Shoes...

As I blogged about a few posts ago, this dress was supposed to be my Mother's Day dress until my sewing machine went down for a few days and needed repair. Well it was nice to finally finish this dress up. Again, I was inspired to make this dress in order to wear a cute pair of shoes I had in my closet. I think it turned out well and I absolutely love the pattern. Well here's the review.....

Butterick 5600

Pattern Description:
Semi-fitted, straight, above mid-knee dresses A, B, C have front darts, back pleats, self-faced yoke front and neckbands, side seam pockets, outside casing with elastic, self ties and stitched hem. A: sleeveless with self ruffle. B: short, gathered sleeves with elastic casing. C: short sleeves with stitched hem and self tab with nonfunctioning button.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a size 10 for the bodice and size 12 for the skirt. I wanted this to have some fit and didn't want to look like I was wearing a bag with a waist tie.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, Yes, Yes!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
They were!

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved the pattern design, the ruffled front and the elasticized sleeve. I didn't like that the pattern instructs you to hem the skirt before adding the front band. As a result, due to some error on my part, my hem on the front right and left sides aren't exactly equal. Since it was finished early I can't easily correct it. It's not really noticeable but I'm really annoyed by it.

(Such a crazy close-up but my Hubby/Camera Man was determined to get a better shot of the ruffle details. I'm beginning to think he's taking his job too seriously!!! LOL!!!)

Fabric Used:
Gray cotton sateen

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
1. I left off the pockets.
2. I didn't slipstitch the yoke but instead could flip it inside out and sew it.
3. I didn't slipstitch the facing (step 44) instead I serged 3/8" off the facing edge and stitched in the ditch on right side of facing to catch facing underneath.
4. I finished the sleeves by serging the edges and sewing them up. I didn't create a narrow hem for the elastic casing.
5. I forgot to mention that I made view B and added the ruffles from view A to it.
6. I lengthened the dress 3". I'm so glad I did this because it would've bee really short.

(The inspiration for this dress was indeed the shoes!!!)

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, I really would like one in denim or a bright color!

Conclusion:
Great dress! Simple to make and oh so stylish!!!

Style Safari ---Part I

Thanks so much for your feedback to my last post. You guys left some interesting comments that made me think a bit. I'm definitely ready to make some changes in my sewing selections. I'm ready to change up my style a bit.

But before I get into that I want to announce that I did get my sewing machine back and "she" has a clean bill of health. I thank God for Mr. Smiley and his 40+ years of experience in sewing machine repairs. It turns out that there was a small piece of metal underneath my needle plate that isn't typical of older Brother's. This piece, if I understand it correctly is suppose to prevent the thread from backing up if you turn the hand wheel backwards instead of forward. Well somehow it got bent and my bobbin thread was getting stuck on it preventing my feed dogs from moving properly. To solve the problem he removed that piece and she runs as good as new. Ok, on to the details of this post.....

I'm feeling good and for some reason quite liberated. I'm in the mood for an adventure. Based on my last post I had to do some soul searching about my sewing selections. I've loved the things I've sewn but I'm ready to step out a bit to explore and get in touch with my style. To be quite honest I don't know how to define it. I know what I like but I don't know if I fit into any particular category. I'm sure I do, probably in a few, but I don't know what that is. But if I had to apply adjectives to my style I would describe it as colorful, fun, and feminine. I really love prints and explosions of color.

So I'm pretty excited. I'm ready to get out there and begin discovering my style. So I'm diving into this with a little research. I have about 40 fashion magazines I've been collecting for the past year that I really hadn't had time to dive into. So I plan on going through them and collecting pictures of what I consider my style and see if I can gain a bit of assessment there. I also hope to gain a little bit of style inspiration along the way. I'm in search of my style, how fun!!!! I'll let you know what I discover......

Wrench in the Plans/ Ghosts of Mother's Day Past....

First of all Happy Mother's Day to all of you Wonderful Mom's out there! That's all of you who make a difference in the lives of children or friends whether they're biologically yours or not. Thanks for making a great impact and for your sacrifice.

Well today was an excellent day despite the little adventure I had on yesterday afternoon. It's unfortunate that I had no "new" Mother's day dress to wear today. So I didn't get to wear the shoes I showed in my last post. It's not the end of the world and it's the least of my worries since my "baby" is now in the shop. Yes, "boo-hoo", my sewing machine is in the shop!!! Yesterday afternoon I was nearly 85% done with my dress when I noticed my sewing machine began making a clicking sound. Well I figured out it was probably the bobbin or I my needle had dulled. Well after changing these 2 things and even taking out the bobbin case and clearing out any thread under my machine it still kept clicking and even started to jam when I sewed. So I knew right then and there that was the end of my sewing for the day, especially when I tried the back up machine and it wouldn't cooperate with me---that's a whole other story.

So I did what any good Mom would do, I immediately called the only man I trust with servicing my machine. His name is Mr. Smiley (that's his name for real, no joking) and he's the owner of Smiley Sewing center. I called him and arranged to drop it off in the next couple of hours. He lovingly took my machine and I won't have a prognosis until Monday afternoon. I hope a tune-up is all that's needed. I can't function without my sewing machine:(.

So that whole event left me without a dress so I had to dig deep in my closet to find a replacement. I have other cute dresses I've sewn before but I noticed a dress I'd worn once back in 2009. It was my Mother's Day dress from that year and I'd never thought to wear it again. Now that's the thing I can't quite wrap my mind around. This isn't the first time that's happened. I don't know why I make dresses for certain occasions that I end up only wearing once. Well that's understandable with a formal gown but this is just a basic dress. So feeling a little guilty I thought I'd give it another go. After trying it back on I figured nothing was too wrong with it although I felt that all of the pink made me look like a "Black version of Barbie" LOL! And I guess it wasn't so bad. Here's the dress.....It's NewLook 6557 worn with a fuschia crocheted bolero.....

But I've noticed I've made a habit of these "one time wear dresses". Here's my Mother's Day dress from last year. I haven't wore it sense.

Just to add fuel to the fire---here's my Easter dress from last year. I don't even want to look at it again. And a good deal of work went into this one....

What's up with me? Could it be my fashion choices have changed all that much? Are they out of style? I don't know what's up with me. But I have to admit that it's weird to walk into your closet and be "haunted" by dresses of the "not-so-distant past". Does this happen to any of you? Do you unintentionally make "one time wear" dresses?
So despite not finishing my dress and my "baby" being in the shop, Mother Day's was great and deep down inside I'm happy I got the opportunity to wear an oldie. I forgot that I blogged about this dress a year ago and like the dress I didn't finish yesterday, I was inspired to make it because of a pair of shoes too!LOL! So what can you say, things always have a way of working themselves out. I have to admit, at least my LOVE for the shoes remains the same......

Sewing Jots & Tittles 5.6.11

"Sewing Jots & Tittles" is my weekly post where I get to ramble on and on about sewing related stuff that's been on my mind. Here what's been revolving between my ears.....

-Mother's Day Dress-
I'm up at em' early trying to finish up my Mother's Day dress to wear to church on tomorrow. Hey, it's a special holiday so you know my saying "why not make a special dress". I really think I look for reasons to sew and never seem to have to look very far! LOL! Anywho, the inspiration for my dress actually stems from a pair of shoes I've had in my closet for a least a year and have never wore. They're the cutest little gray strappy sandal with encrusted stones down the front panel. I'm almost finished sewing my dress and I'll reveal it on tomorrow. I'll just let it remain a surprise until then.

-Speaking of Mother's Day-
I received gifts from my 2 favorite people---My Hubby and the "Wee-One". Yup, those are gift cards to Hancock's & Jo-Ann's Fabric. They know me all too well:)

- Finally some Vogues.....
For some reason my Jo-Ann's store will not get an entire shipment of Vogue patterns for the newest Summers season. They keep getting a few patterns here and there. I finally got my hands on some last week. This is what I picked up. I even was forced to get pattern 1240 in a smaller size since that was the only pattern they had. I'll see if I can exchange it for the right size if it ever comes in again. Sign..... But I'm happy I at least got some of the patterns I want.

-New McCall's-
Well although I was able to pick up all but 2 Vogue's I was looking for I was delighted to find the new McCall's in stock. I didn't know they were in since the new catalog wasn't out. So on a hunch I checked the drawers and there they were. Now the new McCall Summer patterns are not very appealing to me and to be quite honest left much to be desired but there were a few that caught my eye. I love, love, love the blue top featured in the right pattern. Now that's my style!

- Sorta a Wadder-
Well it's been a while since I had one but hey as we all know they happen. This one is actually salvageable but I'm not sure if I want to make the effort. The top is too big so I would have to pinch out alot of excess fabric and probably add some elastic on the upper back bodice. I should have used a more stable knit for this top. I used a cotton knit so the stretch was too much for this top. I like the design, but it's a little revealing if you're not careful. I'll think about it making it again. But it's definitely worth giving it a try if you use the right knit:)

(To get this top to fit the dressform I had to pinch out 4" in the back. The same when I tried it on. Also, I'm not feeling the key hole but that's an easy fix---just whipstitch it up closed some. Again I might give it another try with a more stable knit. It would work perfect then.)

- Series on Sewing with Knits-
I've read so many comments on my blog and others about the frustrations people have in sewing knits. For me they've never been all that difficult to sew but I know what it's like to pick the wrong fabric for a project (as seen above). Either way, I thought I could do several posts on sewing with knits in the next week or two that will give some helpful pointers and hopefully help those who struggle overcome some of the challenges--that is if anyone's interested. Please let me know.

Mar / April 2011: 10,000 Sewing Hours Challenge Review & May / June: 10,000 Hr. Challenge Goals

I'm pretty excited about the new month because it jumpstarts my May/June 10,000 Hour. But before I can move on to my new challenge goals I need to bring my April/May Challenge months to a close. Sorry, no direct pics in this post. Ugghh, I know--I promise to include some in the as I always do:)

Looking back over the last 2 months I have no regrets. It truly was a time for "Special Occasion" sewing. At the beginning of March I made my daughter's Father/ Daughter Banquet dress. Then I had to move on to my Gala Gown to ready in time for early April. I finished the month up by making me and my daughter's Easter dresses. Somewhere in the middle I made a Cynthia Rowley dress. So 5 dresses in 2 months time. I would have love to sewn more but I had some client work that kept me somewhat occupied as well. So for the past 2 months I was exactly where I wanted to be---busy sewing!!!

Ok to move on to the 2 months that lay ahead. I'm working on my Mother's day outfit as we speak. I'm making 2 pieces and I don't have much time to get them done before the end of the week. I'm still deciding on patterns but I MIGHT (you know we seamstresses always change our minds) have narrowed down the fabrics I plan to use. For the top I have a sheer textured polyester with very interesting colors----white, orange, light and dark gray, green (pretty interesting shade)---all in an unique pattern. It will be a top of some sort. I also have white cotton sateen which will probably serve as a pant of some sort. Still trying to work it out but it's coming slowly but surely:) I'll give you a sneak peak later this week provided I don't change my mind again. I just don't feel like being too fancy for Mother's day. I kinda feel like I should do something Bohemian chic. I'll figure it out.....

As far as the rest of the month and next goes---I'll be focusing solely on making casual Summer clothes which I highlighted in a previous post here, with the exception of a cute outfit for church here or there. It's fair to say that I'll be picking patterns from the same pile I showed in April. My emphasis is cute and casual. That's what I'm all about. So I'm keeping it simple and uncomplicated.....and of course fun.

New Look 6936

Somehow I mistakenly thought this was the last day of April so I was hustling to get a couple more blog posts in before the month ended. I can't believe how fast April went by. No worries, guess I'll just start the month off fresh with a post. As I mentioned in my last blog post, I had 1 1/2 yd of fabric and had to find some creative way to make a dress out of it that wasn't too short or revealing since I wanted to wear it to church. Well I decided to give New Look 6936 a shot and am happy I did. Nothing overwhelmingly fancy about the pattern but considering I was using a pretty bold print I needed a more subdued pattern so this fit the bill perfect. Here's my review.......

New Look 6936

Pattern Description:
Knit dress with bodice variations and elasticized waist. I made view B.

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a 10 on top and a 12 on the skirt.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, yes!!!

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Very much so but always count on me to overcomplicate things a bit.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the gathered shoulders and ties, the high waist and elasticized waistline.

Fabric Used:
A black, red, white floral print matte jersey.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

1. Added 3" to the length and only made a 1/2" hem.
2. I did as other Pattern Reviewers recommended and made fabric ties instead of using ribbon for the shoulder seam. I cut 1.25" wide & 18" long strip, sewed them and turned them inside out. I made 4- 2 for each shoulder.

3. I created a elastic waistline casing using the waist seam allowance and did not sew the casing down through all layers as directed. Instead I simply pressed it down.
4. I added clear elastic to the neckline and coverstitched it down.
5. Also there's ALOT of ease in this pattern so because I didn't want 6" of ease in bodice I scaled down a size. Just keep that in mind when choosing your size.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think I might. It's a cute and quick dress (pattern says 2 hours) if you don't make a bunch of blunders like I did. Let's see it took me a extra couple of hours to make and I accidentally cut 3" off of the back skirt and had to serge it back on (fortunately with the print you can't tell) and I didn't like having to make the shoulder ties (I was just being lazy and slow). I had too many distractions to be trying to sew. But I made this in an evening's time so that's not too bad.

Conclusion:
Pretty and yet simple and easy dress to make. It's a great dress and in my case it was a nice way to highlight a cute knit print.
